I must say, the winter months are my favourite time of the year for getting all wrapped up in chunky knits and knee high boots, and it becomes totally acceptable to wear 5 layers of clothing…

During the colder months I tend to stick to neutral shades, as fuchsia pink doesn’t particularly send off the wintery vibes! Its also important that there aren’t too many contrasting colours flying about- keep it simple, trust me! You don’t want to look like youre wearing your whole wardrobe!

If you are layering up for a casual day, like going to uni, I would suggest the first layer always be a solid colour and something fitted- shirts always work well too, with a sweater thrown over the top to give it an edgier look! If you opt for a plain tee, throwing a chunky cardigan on top and a long coat always keeps it classy and fashionable! If you want to dress this up and take it from day-2-night, I would suggest a lace fabric added in somewhere to mix it up. Scarfs are always important when layering it up and if you don’t already have a pattern in there why not throw in a tartan scarf and add a little Scottish touch!

The most important part of layering is making sure we don’t make ourselves look bigger than we really are! I would recommend a belt if you are conscious of your waistline – chunky belts work really well over any knit! I would always stick to slim fit bottoms such as dark skinny jeans, or to make it dressier, wear tights with a skirt or leather look bottoms! Working with your body shape is also important: if you’re tall, I would recommend playing around with lengths such as a layering a dress with a shirt underneath. Do what feels best for you!

As for shoes, I am an avid wearer of my black hi-top converse as I can easily match them with any outfit, but most importantly I cant argue with how comfy they are- especially with those merry walks up the hills of Strathclyde uni… If you were wondering about more dressy footwear, you can never go wrong with a pair of heeled ankle boots, one of my more recent buys was a pair of black patent boots from Zara which I absolutely adore and they can be found in most high-street shops this season. If you want to add more accessories, I would definitely add a little classy fedora hat- it gives that extra quirkiness and you could match it with a small cross over bag or a little tote and you’re good to go! Have a look at these high-street pieces at the bottom if you want to have a little nosey…(oh! and don’t forget to use your UNiDAYS discount gals!)
