How to Get What You Really Want for Valentine’s Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Cal State LA chapter.

So it is that time of the year again; you and the bae are thinking and planning what to do for this special day. While he plans the dinner, the flowers, the chocolates, he is also planning another bad gift. The first few special occasions are always the hardest. The bae has no idea what you like, he is still learning your style, he just buys whatever the sales person recommends and you…you get stuck with an ugly gift. After having had many bad gifts in the past, here is a list of tips to get what you really want for Valentine’s Day!

1.     Express your likes and dislikes early; can’t expect the boyfriend to read your mind.

This might sound selfish but if you don’t tell the bae what you like, and most importantly what you DON’T like, you’re likely to get a bad gift

2.     Drop not so subtle hints.

You know he is getting you a gift, why not stir him in the right direction? As you stroll through the mall to watch yet another DC Comics movie, say “Oh look babe!! Isn’t that super cute?! I totally want one, maybe I’ll come back for it next week.” Subtle but you got your point across.

3.     Wish Lists

Wish lists are not just for your mom and grandma. Register in different stores and pick out what you really like. Don’t be afraid to posts those lists either online or on your fridge. Any way you can get this information to your boo is the right way to get a gift you really want.

4.     Send emails and texts, lots of them!!

A couple of weeks before Valentine’s Day, feel free to randomly send emails and texts messages. Use winky faces and kiss emojis to lighten up the mood. Your bf will probably ignore them till the very last minute when he is scrambling to look for a gift.

5.     Use your friends as help

This may be your last resource, but very valuable. Have your best friend ask and find out if he has your gift. If not, have her guide the boo into the perfect gift for this Valentines Day!!

If you follow the tips on this list not only are you going to get gifts that you love, but your boyfriend will thank you too. This is just as stressful for them as it is for you. A bad gift is as painful for you as it is for him, because it will sit in a box and be worn very few times as an act of commitment.
