Meet Philosophical P-Plant Worker, Emery!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Portland chapter.

Emery is a contemplative, easy-going individual who’s perspective on life has a lot to offer! If you see him around campus, don’t be shy and say hi.

Hometown: Palm Desert, CA

Year: Sophomore

Major: Philosophy and Social Work

Why did you choose to study philosophy?

Well, Analese, I realize I have no idea what to do with my life, and at the same time I want to try everything, so I didn’t want to do nursing or engineering, it felt too confined.

What sparked your interest in social work?

I just really like to help people. I get a lot of joy when someone says, “Oh, what you said really helped me out that day!” I just really want to help people with my life somehow.

What’s it like to work at P-Plant?

Most of the guys have been working there for 15+ years, and they’re totally content with working outside and at the school. I think it’s really beautiful, this is something these guys really love to do so they stay here and do it, but at the same time it doesn’t go along with the societal norm of making yourself big. There’s a pull between wanting to view it as beautiful and society saying it’s not because it’s not prosperous.

What notable life experiences have you had since coming to college?

Clubs are great, but a lot of life happens outside of the main track of school. We have so many options to go out and explore.

Do you have any advice for college students globally?

Always say “yes” to life experiences, to an extent. Anything that potentially sounds like fun, say yes.
