As we sat in DB, being basic and drinking Starbucks, I got to know this week’s Campus Celeb a little bit better. Becky Taskulova ’17 is a leader on campus and active in Greek life!
Majors: Business Administration & Political Science
Hometown: Huntington Valley, PA
Activities on campus: Member of AOII and Vice President of Programming for Panhel
HC: So, first of all why Panhel?
Becky: I got involved with Panhel by first running for Panhellenic delegate for my chapter at SJU. I heard about it from older sisters in my chapter and wanted to be part of something that would bring me together with other members of Greek life and other students at SJU. I didn’t know much about Greek life before college and I thought Panel would be a way for me to learn more about how it works across campus.
HC: So you said, you didn’t know much about Greek life before college, so did you not always want to be in a sorority?
Becky: That’s true; I was born in Russia and lived there until I was 12. All I knew about Greek life was what I saw in the movies, as cliché as it sounds. I thought it looked fun, but also it was a strange concept to me. *laughs*
HC: Wait, that’s so cool! Tell me more about Russia.
Becky: I was born in St. Petersburg and a huge difference I noticed from America and there is one it really is freezing there, and two people are not welcoming. You could walk down the street and pass by tons of people and everyone has a straight face. It’s really different than around here.
HC: How real was your culture shock?
Becky: Well, again all I knew about the US was what I saw on TV and in the movies. Western culture has a huge presence in Russia, so I learned English in school and knew some pop culture, but the slang and the way school works was very different.
HC: Did you want to come?
Becky: NO. I didn’t want to leave my friends behind, but since my parents decided to move I had no choice. America is home to me now though.
HC: Do you ever go back?
Becky: I go almost every summer; it’s like a vacation. I get to see some family and travel. It’s the best of both worlds.
HC: Why SJU?
Becky: It was close to home and I loved the community and how beautiful it is.
HC: Favorite spot on campus?
Becky: Starbucks
HC: Your go to drink?
Becky: Venti Caramel ice coffee, cream, and shot of espresso.
HC: Favorite place to eat around campus?
Becky: Sweet Green.
HC: Piece of advice incoming freshmen?
Becky: Don’t stress yourself out and try to get involved?
HC: Favorite part about SJU?
Becky: Being involved. If I didn’t join Greek life, I would not know as many people or have as many friends and from there I was able to branch out and meet a ton of other people in different sororities and fraternities.
HC: Favorite quote?
Becky: Fate loves the fearless.
If you ever see Becky around, most likely in the lib or starbs, don’t be afraid to say hi!
HCXO,
Diana
