The Top 3 Moments From the 88th Academy Awards

The 88th Academy Awards took place Sunday night in Los Angeles. Chris Rock returned to the big stage to host the Oscars for his second time, addressing all of the recent issues in the media. Sam Smith, The Weeknd and Lady Gaga all gave amazing peroformances of the nominated songs. There were a lot of moments to be talked about but here are by far the top 3!

1. Leonardo DiCaprio winning his first Oscar! 

After being nominated for the Academy Awards five times already, DiCaprio finally won his first Award for his role in The Revenant. During his speech, he shed shed light on the issue surrounding global warming, a subject very close to his heart. 

2. Chris Rock’s Opening Monologue

Back again as the host of the Academy Awards, Chris Rock came out swinging with his jokes and his punches. He addresed the giant elephant in the room–diversity. While doing so, he called out the Will Smith and his family for boycotting the awards show because of the lack of diversity at the Oscars. Later on in the show he helped his daughter sell girl scouts cookies raising $65,243.

3. Lady Gaga’s Emotional Performance 

One of the most emotional moments of the night came from Lady Gaga. Lady Gaga peroformed her nominated song Till It Happens To You, bringing the audience to tears and getting a standing ovation. Joining her were survivors of sexual assult with phrases on there forearms detailing the songs lyrics. 

Overall, it was a great show and Her Campus Winthrop is already counting down the days until next year’s show!
