13 Thoughts Every Student Has When They Go From a Meal Plan to a Kitchen

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

We’re back with another themed week on the site: Food Week. This semester, Her Campus FSU has created themed weeks dedicated to exclusive content we believe all of our readers should have access to. Keep up on the site for the next few days as we cover everything from the best brunch spots in Tallahassee to a complete recount of what went down when one of our staff writers decided to cook a meal in her dishwasher (yes, it’s a thing and yes, she actually tried it). Don’t miss out!

There’s a point in every student’s life where they decide to take that massive step into adulthood. In some minds, it might be filling taxes or leasing an apartment for the first time, but in all honesty, we all know it’s when you graduate from a dorm-required meal plan and begin to cook for yourself in your own kitchen. Some collegiettes are blessed with the natural ability to cook, while some have taken some time to learn a thing or two and some just never do. For everyone, it’s still considered a major adjustment from having the ability to eat buffet-style food at either Fresh Food Company or Suwannee at any time of day (well, until they  close at 10 p.m.). Regardless of skill level, here are some of the first thoughts that go through every student’s mind when they get behind the stove.

1. OMG – I no longer have a meal plan!

That moment you realize that you no longer have to go to the dining hall and live off of pizza, cereal and never ending cookies. Forget about the freshman 15, hello healthy(ish) cooking!

2. I can’t wait to actually try out all of these recipes I have on my Pinterest “food” board.

I can finally make all those Tasty videos come to life!

3. Wait…I have to go grocery shopping???

So who wants to drive me to Costco (and then hold me back when I try to buy all the multi-packages of Nutella)?

4. Until I fill up my fridge, I guess I can survive off of variations of bread and cheese, right?

I’m sure there’s no way I can burn grilled cheese, right? That would be pathetic.

5. Does anyone have pans I can use?

I guess it would be considered “important” to buy a set of pans and stuff if I actually want to cook.

6. Ow! The oven is hot – I think I just burned myself!

Come to think of it, maybe I should have bought a pair of oven mitts when I bought my pans.

7.  I forgot to buy the main ingredient…again!

How do the eggs and milk always run out so fast?!

8. Uh-oh. Why is their smoke coming from it?

When the air vents above the stove become your best friend because you’re afraid of the smoke alarm going off.

9. Wait…I have to wash my own dishes?

At least I have a dishwasher! Wait – no, my apartment didn’t come with one. Damn.

10. Have I cooked this meat through properly or will I give myself Salmonella?

Wait, is it supposed to be pink in the middle? I need to call Mom.

11. Is this expired/old?

I don’t even want to think about how long that has been in the fridge.

12. The sink is already filled again? I swear I just cleaned everything!

Can we just buy some throwaway plates and silverware? What’s so wrong with that?

13. I was able to cook something edible without burning it first!

Woohoo! Let’s celebrate because I’ve reached official chef status.
