Dear Iowa City,

Search relationship goals anywhere on the internet, and it’s almost guaranteed one will find those almost laughable Twitter and Instagram pictures everyone is guilty of pining over.

Yes, we would all enjoy a gorgeous house and more money (for Saturday night pizza) from our significant others, but I think our society needs to take a step back to take in the real meaning behind “relationship goals”.

All you single peeps out there can still have relationship goals by knowing your values and what you look for in a partner, one who cares about how your day went or offers to drive you to Starbucks. Plus, it’s college. This time in your life only comes once, so don’t sweat the dating thing until you find someone worth it. Make your goals to take a road trip this summer, ace your bio exam, or grab some ice cream with your best friends! Trust me, you’ll meet someone at the right time, when you least expect it.

For you cute couples out there, I hope your goals include providing happiness, trust and love to the person you are in a relationship with. Goals aren’t singularly defined; they are molded to what works for every individual couple. Make a goal to spend at least an hour of quality time together a week (without devices), compromise when they want pizza and you want Mexican, and try to not be too sassy about seeing that new movie they’ve been obsessing over.

Goals can seem easy to make, but the most important parts are how we reach them and everything that happens in-between creating and executing them. It’s not wrong to want the very best out of a relationship, or the occasional Instagram worthy moment, but it’s important to remember why we want that relationship in the first place. Our goal in life is to be happy, so grab those important to you and make the most of these years.

Love,

The girl who requests Stacy’s Mom everywhere
