Best Ice Cream in the Boston Area

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Brandeis chapter.

Ice cream is absolutely one of my all-time favorite foods. I love trying new flavors and stores, and have complied a little list of some of my favorite places to get ice cream in the Boston area. So go out there and enjoy some creamy, frozen deliciousness! Oh, and if you really want to sound like a Bostonian when you order your ice cream be sure to ask for jimmies (those are sprinkles!).

J.P Licks (multiple locations)

This is my all-time favorite place to ice cream in the Boston area. I’m absolutely obsessed with their delicious flavors, and so are many other people because the line is often long and when it gets warm, out the door! J.P Licks offers ice cream, frozen yogurt, sundaes, frappes (the Massachusetts way to say milkshakes!), and more. One of my favorite flavors is Cookies and Cream. This isn’t your typical vanilla ice cream with chunks of Oreo cookies. This ice cream tastes like the most delicious pure blended Oreo, and has junks of cookie! My other favorite flavor is Cookies and Cake Batter. It is a super scrumptious vanilla cake batter base with chunks of Oreo—I think I’m in heaven.

Lizzy’s Homemade Ice Cream (Waltham and Needham)

Lizzy’s offers ice cream, frozen yogurt, sherbet, sorbet, and a few non-dairy options. It offers yummy ice cream in all the classic flavors like chocolate chip cookie dough, mint chip, and peppermint stick, but also has some interesting seasonal flavors like pumpkin pie. What I really like about Lizzy’s is the extensive selection of wet and dry toppings that you can add to your treat to make them even better! Also, the Waltham location is super close to campus so you can have a sweet treat whenever you feel like it.

Cabot’s Ice Cream and Restaurant (Newton)

Cabot’s serves classic diner-style food like burgers and breakfast, but the real highlight is the ice cream selection. They serve Richardson’s Dairy ice cream that is very high quality, and they make some of the best frozen yogurt I’ve ever had. Just pick a topping and they will blend it to bits within the yogurt—it’s incredible. Another notable thing about Cabot’s is the super long menu filled with a million different unique sundae creations. From a classic hot fudge sundae to an extreme like “The Dentist’s Diaster” (basically every candy-flavored ice cream topped with it’s respective candy), Cabot’s has a sweet-tooth satisfying creation for you. Be warned though, this place is cash only.

Amarino (Boston)

Now this place I personally have not tried yet, but I have seen a few articles and TV features on it. Apparently, they have delicious authentic gelato that you can get shaped into those super Instagram-worthy gelato roses. Sounds pretty enticing to me.

Truly Yogurt (Wellesley)

Another cash only location, Truly Yogurt is my go-to place for soft-serve and frozen yogurt. However, they also have great traditional ice cream too. One of the biggest appeals of Truly are their super unique flavors of the day.
