Hello my name is Lindsey and I was a curl neglector until the 11th grade. It was always so hard to deal with my curls and I actually use to think it was ok to toss my wet hair into a ponytail before sleeping (hold the gasps). So not only was I lazy with my hair, I was neglectful. After I started embracing my curly hair I began playing around with new products depending on what my high school, and later college, budget allowed. I’ve been a fan of DevaCurl since I received a trial kit for my birthday, but shelling out $20 for conditioner has never been in my budget. So I decided to go for a product on the (somewhat) cheaper end within the same line: the DevaCurl Heaven in Hair Mask ($17 on Amazon).

The above picture is how my hair usually air dries. It is curly but often needs some help to form properly, including the assistance of a diffuser and hair gel for maximum unified structure.

Now we can move into the actual testing stage. The instructions said to apply the cream to damp hair and leave it in for 15 to 30 minutes. I chose to go with 23 minutes, right in the middle. My hair got stiff and a little white. To be honest that cringe-worthy scene from “Something About Mary” with the “hair gel” application kept popping into my mind. Anyways …

After I rinsed my hair out I decided to let it air dry with just a quarter-size amount of pomade serum to help form the curls a little bit. Below is how it turned out.

The results weren’t jaw-dropping-ly amazing (despite my facial expression), but I might need to use it more often. The instructions suggested using it twice a week so who knows, it might just need more applications before the effects really become evident. I did notice a bit more structure and shine in my curls, so that was a nice bonus.

I’ve definitely seen faster and more obvious results after one use from DevaCurl’s shampoo/conditioner/gel sampler (mentioned earlier). However, the price I paid for the hair mask is much easier to swallow on a college budget. So if you’re looking for a new hair mask for curly hair, go ahead and give this a try. If you’re looking for fast results, though, I recommend just ordering the trial pack off of Amazon. If you’re careful, you can get three separate washes out of the pack even though they advertise it as just one.
