Every Virginia Tech student knows how erratic Blacksburg weather is. In one day, it can be warm, windy, rainy, cold, snowy, foggy and somehow warm again. How can we possibly prepare for such unpredictable weather? Here are six ways to handle it in style!
1. Carry an umbrella

We all know how much it rains and snows here. Carrying an umbrella in your backpack at all times is the best way to stay prepared. I never leave the house without mine, and thus far; I haven’t been caught unprepared. This bubble umbrella from Urban Outfitters is a great purchase if you’re looking for reliable protection. There’s nothing worse than using your umbrella only to find that your backpack is still soaking wet. These umbrellas cover everything.
2. Wear sturdy shoes

This shoe from J. Crew is perfect for any type of weather. Casual black booties are super cute, and these are waterproof. Usually we are forced to wear tacky rain or snow boots when the weather calls for them, but if you can find waterproof shoes you love, they will be the perfect hack.
3. Bring a hat
With the extreme wind we’ve been experiencing in Blacksburg recently, the need for a hat has intensified. Walking across the Drillfield blinded by your own hair blowing in the wind is not ideal. 4. Go for a coat that is both warm and waterproof

Raincoats are great and all, but they aren’t usually warm. To prepare for both precipitation and cold weather, opt for a warm and waterproof jacket. This Eddie Bauer parka is a great option.
5. Dress in layers
The end-all way to prepare for Blacksburg weather is to dress in layers. You can then shed items as it warms up or pile them on as it cools down. This article from Elle presents loads of layering options.
6. Check the weather before you leave

Though the weather here doesn’t usually abide by the forecast, there’s no harm in checking it before you leave for class. If it’s raining, it’s better to throw on those rain boots ahead of time. If it’s supposed to be especially cold, bring your jacket. It’s better to be safe than sorry!
