What You’ll Miss About Your Hometown

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Utah chapter.

Moving away from your home is anything but easy. You are moving away from all of your child memories and everything that is comfortable in your life. It can be scary but it also can be one of the most exciting things that you have done thus far in your life. Moving to a new state or town gives you the opportunity to start over and create a new life for yourself. You learn how to be independent and where to find the cute little coffee shops that you love from back home. It forces you to explore your city to find new places that will become your regular hang out. In the process of exploring, you can find yourself missing home a little bit more than you expected.  Here are some of the things that you will 100% miss as you venture off to your new home.

The comfort of knowing your way around

You never think about how convenient it is to know your way around your town until you don’t. You will find yourself looking up directions everywhere you go, and it is a pain. You will begin to miss knowing your old town inside and out and always knowing the best places to go and the perfect place to hang with your friends on the weekends. Everything from home is just comfortable. You can feel comfortable again in your new town, it just takes time and exploring to find the best restaurants, the cute study areas, the beautiful parks to take a walk or just to sit and think.

Your bed and room

This is probably one of the hardest goodbyes that you will have. As soon as you are in your new bed, you will just realize that it’s just not the same. It doesn’t feel right and your pillows don’t fit your head perfectly like they do at home. Your room won’t feel as welcoming. You won’t have a room filled of memories where you and your friends used to hang out after school; it will just be an open room where you stuff is. It will become more comfortable as you create new memories in your room, but at first it will be weird coming home to an unfamiliar place.

Your Family

Family are the people that are there for you, always. When you come home from a bad or stressful day, they are people that you are able to vent to and find comfort in. It can become a harsh reality realizing that you don’t live with your family anymore and your daily communication is through the phone. This gives you the opportunity to find friends that are equal to your family. Whether it is your roommates, sorority sisters, or people you randomly meet one afternoon while walking around; they are out there and they will make being away from your family a lot easier.

Your Favorite Local Spot

In your hometown you know the best spots to go and eat. It becomes apart of your routine to always go to your favorite spots with your friends and it’s something that you will always look forward to doing when you come to your town again. It will take a little exploring to find a new favorite spot, but you’ll find it. Every city is filled with fun local spots that have the best food or drinks, and you’ll have the best time showing your family your new spot when they come to visit.

Your pet

You don’t realize the impact an animal has until you aren’t seeing them every day. Pets have a way of brightening our days the second that we see them and just being around our pets make us happy. You will miss your loved pet when you have a bad day and you just want to cuddle with them and take a long nap. In most college apartments or dorms, you aren’t allowed to have pets so adjusting to living an everyday life pet less will take some time.

Moving can be scary but it’s also such an adventure. It’s so fun to create a new home for yourself and have memories in two different places. It may take a little time to get comfortable, but eventually you’ll learn all the fun places and find yourself knowing your way around town. No place in the world can take the memories of your childhood hometown, and you will probably always be counting down the days until you are able to return but it’s important to remember to cherish your times in your new home and create new memories, because you never know when you will be leaving that place behind as well.
