12 Reasons to Make Puerto Rico your Spring Break Destination

  1. You don’t need a U.S. passport: Puerto Rico has been a U.S. territory since 1898, therefore Puerto Ricans are American citizens by birthright, so it counts as a domestic flight.

  2. There are no weather surprises: Eighty-five degrees ALL YEAR ROUND. Yes, all the time, like, ever.

  3. You can put to good use your college Spanish credits: The official language of the island is both English and Spanish, yet Spanish is the most widely spoken one. Yet, if you get lost in translation, someone, somewhere might rescue you, as about half the population is bilingual.

  5. Legal drinking age is 18: And cheap! $1.50 local beers are a deal here.

  6. It is a surfer’s paradise: Rincon has world-wide recognized surfing beaches. People come from all over the world to swing some waves!

  7. It is whale watching season: Humpback whales can be appreciated throughout the northwestern coast of the island from November to March, a show you don’t want to miss.

  8. It is home of  the only rainforest in the U.S.: El Yunque is famous for its breathtaking views and biological diversity.

  9. And the sixth most beautiful beach in the world: Playa Flamenco at the municipality island of Culebra was chosen among the ten most beautiful beaches in the world by tripadvisor.com You can get there through a $2 ferry ride from the Fajardo port, about an hour ride from the capital San Juan. PS: It gets WILD: Spring Break at Culebra is college student’s paradise. Flamenco gets crowded with hundreds of college students ready for nonstop FUN.

  10. And there is Las Justas too…Happening on the second week of April, Las Justas are the main college sport’s event for university student on the island. College spirit there is like no other you have ever experienced.

  11. Enjoy Cinco Dias con Nuestra Tierra: Held during the second week of march at UPRM, this agricultural festival combines the best of our agricultural products and artisans, along with great music, tasty food and the Colegial tradition that sets it apart.

  12. You can finally find out where is El Morro: The most famous destination among tourists, there is a local’s joke about it, because the first Spanish phrase everyone seems to learn is “Donde es El Morro?” El Morro is a 500 year-old Spanish fortification that surrounds Old San Juan, where the Capitol building and Fortaleza (governor’s house) are at.
