Name: Haley Caulkins

Year: junior

Major: management

Minor: history

Hometown: Nashville, Tennessee

Why did you decide to major in management?

“I had an internship when I was 17 at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville with the fan relations side of the Nashville Predators hockey team. I got to help with some management coordination of events, and I helped manage patrons and problems on game day. I had an epiphany as I was trying to pick a major. I thought, ‘Oh, that’s something I enjoy doing. I could do that for life.’”

What is something you’re passionate about?

“I’m a huge hockey fan! Ice hockey is my life, although my team (the Predators) has not been doing well this year.”

What are some of your other interests?

“I love ballet. I’m also a huge Harry Potter fan.”

What about the history minor? Have you always just loved the subject?

“Actually, when I was in the eighth grade, I got a D in history. Then I went on to be in the honors and AP classes, which you have to be recommended for at my high school. In high school, I got a teacher who really nourished my love for history, Dr. Jack, and that helped.”

Cats or dogs?

“I am a cat person. I have always had a cat in my life, from day one. People don’t think they’re loving but they are! And they can take care of themselves, which if you’re really bad at taking care of your own self, that’s nice. They just sleep all day, which I identify with.”

Where would you go if you could travel anywhere?

“I really want to do a cross-country road trip, or visit all 50 states. You can go other places, but America is huge, and there’s so much to see. There’s so much history here.”

.

What are some of your core values?

“Independence is a core value because I raised as an only child, so I’ve always been independent. That got nurtured when I went to Harpeth Hall in the fifth grade. They really encourage you to find your own voice. Having gone to that school for eight years, that shaped me a lot. Another one is transparency. I don’t like when people beat around the bush. Just say what you mean to say.”
