10 Ways to tell you’re a Fashion Major

1.)  Everyone thinks you take the easiest classes.

Most fashion majors, whether you are design, merchandising, or communication/promotion are required to take core classes that business majors take too; such as accounting, stats, organizational behavior, economics and marketing. While a lot of classes are core fashion classes, we do take classes in other subjects.

2.)  We dress up for class when we can.

As a fashion major, everyone thinks you need to dress up every day to go to class. Some fashion majors are athletes (see #3), having to wear sports attire a lot of times to class. Yes there are people who do dress up fancy for class everyday, but not every single fashion major wears heels and a dress to class everyday. We want to be comfortable too!

3.)  People expect that you aren’t athletic.

Personally, I think a lot of people expect fashion majors to not be athletic, as when I or other friends in the major tell people we play a sport here at Lasell, they are surprised. As a player on the field hockey team, I think it’s really important to be active and athletic in college no matter what major you are.

4.)  We have to carry sewing kits and art supplies all around campus.

As a freshman or sophomore, Lasell fashion students have to take 3D art, which requires carrying huge pieces of wire for projects around campus. Design majors have to take apparel construction classes, which require carrying around sewing kits. So if you ever see anyone lugging around huge bags or supplies, it is probably a fashion major.

5.)  Your friends ask you to help pick out their outfits.

Part of being a fashion major is people asking you to help them pick out their outfits, and friends asking you your advice as to what does or doesn’t look good on them.

6.)  Friends are always borrowing your clothes.

To go along with picking out outfits, friends also borrow your clothes. Being the same size as your friends or roommates is a plus as you can borrow each other’s clothes as much as you want to.

7.)  You always watch every award show to see celebrities outfits.

Watching the Grammys, Oscars, Golden Globes, and other award shows are important to see celebrities outfits as they are usually discussed in your classes the next day as part of current events.

8.)  You are always on Pinterest.

Checking Pinterest two or three times a day is another important thing to do as new trends, hairstyles, and makeup trends are on the site daily. Trying these new styles is definitely a fun part of experimenting with new things.

9.)  Friends ask you to hem their clothes or sew on loose buttons.

As a fashion major, even if you aren’t design, people ask if you can sew their ripped clothing, hem a pair of pants, or sew buttons onto shirts. Keeping a mini sewing kit definitely comes in handy when you need to fix something up.

10.)  You are always looking to experiment with new trends and try different styles.

Going along with Pinterest, fashion blogs, and YouTube style videos, fashion majors and just college girls in general are always looking up the current fashions or new hairstyles to try. Watching tutorials and videos teaches us how to create a new makeup looks or hairstyles to show off with our awesome style.
