I Gave up Coffee for a Week and Here’s What Happened

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Rowan chapter.

Excerpts from a Coffee Addict’s Diary

I am insanely in love with coffee.  In fact, it’s almost impossible to live without it.  I have about 2-3 cups a day, and the thought of living without coffee had never crossed my mind because COFFEE IS AMAZING.

Recently, a friend of mine challenged me to try something for a week…something I have never done before.  So, I thought I would try something that I thought would really challenge me: give up coffee.  I KNOW…CRAZY RIGHT?!

Day 1

Dear Diary,

I woke up feeling pretty energized because my 8am was cancelled.  I got up and went to the gym around 9:30.  I felt pretty good all day, until about 6.  I almost made it through the day with no headaches.  SO CLOSE!  And don’t even ask me how many times I thought about coffee all day.  I was tempted during the day to just make a cup. I mean, one cup wouldn’t hurt, right?  NO.  I need to keep my mind straight.  It’s only day 1 and I don’t know how I’m going to survive the week…

Day 2

Dear Diary,

From 1 to “I WILL DIE,” this headache is deadly.  I’ve had an extreme migraine all day and I even tried getting my caffeine other ways: soda, candy, and cookies.  Did it work?  Of course not!  One of my co-workers even pulled out essential oils from her purse and let me use the Peppermint one which is supposed to help with headaches.  She told me, “I don’t know if it will work though…I’ve never tried these on a coffee addict.”  Great.  They didn’t even wind up working.  I took Tylenol and now I’m going to bed…I hope tomorrow is better.

Day 3

Dear Diary,

Got up early to get to work on time and grabbed an iced tea from Dunkin’ Donuts since I can’t have coffee.  Going there at least makes me feel better.  It’s so hard to stay away; it’s like Dunkin’ calls my name whenever I pass by.  I had no energy today.  I thought going to the gym after work would help distract me and give me energy, but it was only temporary.  Plus, I noticed that my workout wasn’t as strong as it normally is.  I always drink a bit of coffee before I hit the gym because it boosts my metabolism.  Only 4 more days…I can do this…

Day 4

Dear Diary,

Grabbed another iced tea this morning before church.  After church I went to my aunt and uncle’s house and took care of my cousins (they’re triplets!)  I felt like I could have gone to sleep after only being there for 10 minutes.  Though triplets are a lot to handle, not having any coffee for 4 days so far has worn me down.  I did take note of something today: I eat a lot of junk when I’m tired, and not having coffee makes me tired, thus I’ve been eating so much junk that I’ve probably gained some weight…ugh.

Day 5

Dear Diary,

Today wasn’t such a bad day after all!  I got to sleep in, went to the gym, and I got some black tea lemonade from Starbucks.  It’s actually kind of cool that I can’t drink coffee because I can try other drinks available that I normally wouldn’t try.  You know, you always go with the usual, no matter how much you want to try something, just to be safe.  I kind of feel like I could go without coffee for a while…

Oh, who am I kidding?  I couldn’t even concentrate at work today.  I’m a cashier, and I kept hitting the wrong buttons and I kept zoning out.  Half of the words that came out of my mouth made no sense at all.  Today I told a customer that we were giving out Gingerbread cookies at the Easter Bunny’s house at my work.  My co-worker just looked at me and said, “Kayla, it’s not Christmas.”  “I haven’t had coffee for 5 days.”  She understood in a matter of seconds.  Me without coffee = ??????

Day 6

Dear Diary,

Tried sweet tea lemonade from Dunkin’ today and I actually really liked it.  Plus, IT WAS ONLY $0.99!  Can’t beat that!  I had a lot of energy in the morning, but it quickly left.  Once I got to work I could feel my body shutting down.  My eyes got heavy and I didn’t feel like standing up.  Once again, I had trouble ringing up items and my words were nonsense.  I’m pretty sure I told a customer to “have a nice dollar.”  How many days until coffee?!?!?!?!?!?!

Day 7

Dear Diary,

WHAT WAS I THINKING?!  I can’t go without coffee!  One more day left and I am going crazy today.  I am extremely tired.  I almost fell asleep during class and my eyes couldn’t stay open.  I have never felt so tired in my life.  I almost gave up today and bought a coffee.  I went to Dunkin’ with my friend and I was SO tempted to buy some, but she helped me avoid it by talking me out of it.  Thank God she was there, or I probably would have gotten it.  One more day…one more day…

Day 8

Dear Diary,

I DID IT!  I made it a week without coffee!  And what did I do first thing this morning!  Bought myself a large iced coffee from Dunkin’.  Coffee never tasted better.  I even got up early before my 8am to buy myself a coffee.  I can’t believe I made it.  I honestly thought I would have given up earlier.  BUT I DID IT!

**During this experience, I did learn a few things:

1.      I saved so much money from not buying coffee (but, hey, I’m still going to buy it anyway).

2.      If I don’t have my coffee, I eat so much junky/sugary food (coffee = less junk food consumed; so, COFFEE EVERY DAY!).

3.      Coffee is just one of those things that I enjoy to have every day and it helps me stay awake.  I’m never going to give it up again, that’s for sure!

I am a full-time student at Rowan University majoring in both Early Childhood Education and Literary Studies, with a minor in Writing Arts. I absolutely love writing poetry and hope to get some of mine published one day. I LOVE to read, particularly YA fiction. On my free time I like to watch Netflix, or browse Barnes and Noble for my next read, with a caramel macchiato in hand.
