Everyone goes through a phase of gullibility at some point in their life. During this time we fall for otherwise insane lies. Parents, older siblings, and classmates take advantage of our tendency to be overly trusting. Here are some of the myths and lies that we all fell for:
1. If you swallow a watermelon seed, then a watermelon will grow in your stomach
2. If you pee in the pool, it will turn the water purple/red/blue
As far as I know this does not yet exist, however, it was possibly one of the most terrifying lies. I was so afraid to pee in the pool or that my friend would pee near me and somehow I would be blamed for it. The mere thought of public ridicule was enough to dissuade most kids from this gross habit.
3. If you swallow gum, then it will stay in your stomach for seven years
4. If you don’t behave, Santa/Easter Bunny/Tooth Fairy will not come
I still don’t know how my parents pulled this one off for so long. How did nobody question the idea of a giant bunny traveling around the world to hide Easter eggs on windowsills and on top of kitchen appliances? Also, why was nobody concerned that a fairy came into your bedroom while you were sleeping to collect your baby teeth in exchange for money?Â
5. You must learn to write in cursive because you will need it later in life
6. If you have a dream about someone, then they were thinking about you when they fell asleep
I am going to go out on a limb here and say that neither Beyoncé nor Justin Bieber have never thought of me before they dozed off. But, hey, who knows?
7. You can’t go swimming right after you eat
8. The terrifying face of “Bloody Mary” will appear in the mirror of a dimly lit bathroom if you chant her name three times in a row
I avoided school bathrooms for the first thirteen years of my life because of this crazy myth. Consider yourself lucky if you never had to deal with this middle school legend.
9. If someone hits you on the back when your eyes are crossed, they will get stuck like that forever
10. “No you can’t have a dog because you are allergic”
Was this just me?
As crazy as they may sound now, at some point in our lives we all fell for these lies.
