The Importance of the Relationships on How To Get Away With Murder

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Valdosta chapter.

How to Get Away With Murder is important and impressive for so many reasons. Some people love the acting, specifically Viola Davis’ acting. Others enjoy watching the beautiful cast get into mischief ever week. Most of use enjoy the lies, the murder, and the down right scandalous behavior. However, there is something else that keeps the audience hooked. We can all agree that we are addicted to the dynamics of the couples.

Yes the couples are amazing. Before I go any further let’s be clear that these relationships are not the healthiest, but in a world where you are trying to keep track of all the lies and dead bodies  around you, healthy relationships may seem a bit overrated. HTGAWM has an array of couples and hook-ups on the show, but they all have their own importance. In modern day society we approve of more diverse couples than past generations, and this show is a great reflection of that diversity.

Connor and Oliver are a fan favorite. Audiences have seen a lot of gay couples in mainstream media, but there is something about this couple that is different. It helps that the show doesn’t make them seem like an odd couple they have the same problems as other couples. They also have great sex from time to time which the show does not shy away from. The physical and emotional bond between the characters makes it easier to love this pair.

Colorism is a huge deal in the black community. Also black men are written as romantic monoliths in mainstream media. The are either interested in white women, non black women of color, or fair skinned black women. Most people overlook the importance of this couple because they are the same race, but having a dark skin man care about a dark skin woman on a mainstream television show like this means more than I can put into words.

HTGAWM also tackles bisexuality and the struggles bisexual couples and people face with the main character Annalise. Many mainstream shows only focus on gay and lesbian couples when representing the LGBT community. Bisexual people are sometimes overlooked, but not today.

The show also does a great job promoting a healthy sex drive in relationships, especially where it concerns its female leads. Sex is normally not talked about in public, and there is a huge stigma when it comes to women having sex for pleasure. HTGAWM does a great job showing the different aspects of women’s views as far sex in concerned.

The most notable relationship type in this show are the interracial relationships. Interracial dating is nothing new, but it isn’t talked about and it is still frowned upon in certain circles. HTGAWM has so many interracial couples and hook-ups that it is hard to keep count.

HCXO!
