I Gave Country Music a Shot and You Should Too!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Skidmore chapter.

I was strongly opposed to country music up until very recently. About a month actually. I thought country music was whiney and conservative and dumb. This was all coming from a stereotype about country music that I never stopped to challenge. To me, country music was heavy drinking, racial slurs, patriarchy, and cowboy boots. I now know that there is more to country music than meets the eye. You’ll realize this too if you listen to a few of the songs I have listed below. Country music is so versatile. I can workout to country music and I can facebook stalk that cute guy in my Gov class to country music. Whatever I am up to, there is a high chance there is a country song that will go with my activity/mood. Enjoy my favorites!

Make Me Wanna – Thomas Rhett

“Now baby don’t you look at me that way

‘Cause you know there’s only so much I can take

‘Cause you make me want to

Pull this truck to the side of the road

Slid on over, let me hold you close

And tell you everything I’m thinking

Hop on out and let the tailgate fall

Get drunk on you with no alcohol”

How badly do you want an adorable cowboy to sing this to you?

My Church – Maren Morris

“Can I get a hallelujah

Can I get a amen

Feels like the holy ghost runnin’ through ya

When I play the highway FM

I find my soul revival

Singing every single verse

Yeah I guess that’s my church”

Not all country songs are about religion. This song is about a girl who finds inspiration and relief not from religion, but from driving and listening to music. I think we can all relate to that a little bit.

Daddy’s Money – Brooke Eden

“I ain’t ever had daddy’s money

Didn’t come from the land of milk and honey

Everything I got, I got workin’ to the bone to the bone to the bone

I ain’t takin, I’m makin’ my livin’

What’s mine is mine, it ain’t ever been given

I got it all honey

But I ain’t ever had daddy’s money, no”

Total female empowerment song. I personally love running to this song, but if you need to get pumped up before a job interview or a performance, this song will put you in the right head space.

Nothin’ Like You – Dan + Shay

“I remember when I first met you

Sipping coffee in a corner booth

You were twirling your hair

And I just had to stare

For a minute or two

I was laughing at your stack of books

Then you shot me that smile”

Every girls’ dream no? Just me? Okay but it’s hard to deny that this is totally adorable. I like to think of Dan + Shay’s sound like the country One Direction. Perfect for a long drive when you just stare out the window and pretend you’re in a music video.

Crash and Burn – Thomas Rhett

“Do you hear that

I’m right back

At the sound of lonely calling

Do you hear that

It’s where I’m at

It’s the sound of teardrops falling down, down

A slamming door and a lesson learned

I let another lover crash and burn”

Thomas Rhett sings what every girl hopes their ex-lovers are feeling after a rough break-up. Teardrops falling down? Yeah.. I’m okay with exes crying over me. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
