Meet Global Engagement Summit Committee Member Renée Probetts!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Northwestern chapter.

Name: Renée Probetts

Major: Industrial Engineering

Hometown: Denver, CO

Age: 20

The Global Engagement Summit is a week-long annual conference at Northwestern University. Although the conference may just be five days long, the students who organize it have been working behind-the-scenes all year! Meet one of the newer members of GES, Renée Probetts!

How did you get involved with GES?

This fall quarter when I wasn’t working in Norris, I wanted to be involved in more things on campus. My friend Sarah Faruqui recommended GES and after hearing about it from her I decided to apply!

What committee are you on?

I’m on media and marketing. I helped design the new website as well as contribute to the blog and make promotional materials like Facebook cover photos.

How has your experience on GES changed your overall Northwestern experience?

I feel like it’s introduced me to a lot of people whom I wouldn’t have met otherwise, given that about half of the people are not in Greek life. It’s also given me a different perspective coming from engineering, as it involves a lot of social justice. I was in Design for America last year, which had similar values but focused more on engineering projects themselves than what you can do with them.

Tell me more about the events this weekend!

There are going to be a bunch of workshops and seminars led by delegates from around the world, all geared towards college-aged kids. For example, there is an event on how to work on resumes. A committee on GES has spent the whole year reaching out to a lot of people who are successful in their fields and have something to offer the Northwestern community.

What event this weekend are you most looking forward to?

Talk 3, which is about transitioning post-college. I don’t know what I want to do after college, so I think that will be really helpful. I’m also just excited to meet people from all around the world!

What else are you involved in on campus?

I work at the center desk at Norris, I’m on the Dancer and Beneficiary Relations Committee for NUDM, and I’m the Housing Director for my sorority, Kappa Kappa Gamma. I’m also a Peer Advisor, and a mentor for College Mentors for Kids!
