“Religious Liberty” or Promoting Discrimination?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UGA chapter.

Recently, bills advocating for religious freedom that end up promoting discrimination against LGBTQ individuals have been up for votes across the country. This seems obviously backwards and offensive to many people, and yet, the bills are still passing.

In North Carolina, a single day of legislation got a bill passed that eliminated some recent anti-discrimination laws and requires transgender individuals to use bathrooms that may not align with their gender identities.

In Georgia, a similar bill that would promote discrimination against same-sex couples on account of relgious freedom passed in the Senate and House but was struck down by the governor, Nathan Deal.

In Mississippi, another bill allowing government and business discrimination was passed by lawmakers and awaits approval from the governor.

These laws are causing a huge outcry from LGBTQ advocates and the nation in general, but many people believe that promoting religious “freedom” in this way is completely acceptable.
