RLCG: “I Feel Like I Picked the Wrong Major”

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WVWC chapter.

Dear RLCG,

Now that this year is over and I’ve looked back on it, I’m beginning to feel like I picked the wrong major. I decided to be a bio major so that I could go to medical school. Even though this wasn’t my dream, it was practical and my parents really encouraged the idea. I wish that I would have focused on something I am more interested in like photography. I am wondering if I’m just feeling this way because it was a long year, or if I need to think about changing my major.

Sincerely,

Major Problems

Dear Major Problems,

When you first start thinking about college, the first thing people often ask you is what you want to major in, and the answer isn’t always an easy one. I respect that you want to make a practical decision, but it’s possible to make a career out of any major that you choose. I know that sometimes you want the safety of a job, and want to please your parents, but that doesn’t mean that your passions should take a backseat. But, like you said, it has been a long year and maybe you’re just in a slump.

Just because you are tired of your major at the moment doesn’t mean that you will be by the time that you return in the fall. Maybe there’s a way to combine the best of both worlds: stick with your plans to go to medical school, but also throw in some of your passion. Take some photography classes too, just to get your feet wet to see if it’s something that you would like to pursue.

The best advice I can give you is to sit down and make an informed decision that is yours only. Think about the pros and cons of each side, and do what you feel is best. There is no shame in any major, and I’m confident that you will able to be able to make a career out of any major that you choose. Good luck with your decision!

Sincerely,RLCG Marissa
