The Bright Side to a Break Up

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Warwick chapter.

Break ups are hard. Really hard. Everyone goes through them and everyone accepts that it’s an inevitable part of life. But no matter what, everyone knows there’s a certain trauma to a break up. As women, we’ve got to remember that we don’t need anyone to tell us we’re beautiful, worthwhile or perfect. We should already know that. Easier said than done right? It’s so easy to lose yourself sometimes and but to be honest, something like a break up might be the perfect chance to rediscover how amazing we really are. So here’s a list of things to do straight out of a break up.

Cut all Negativity Out of Your Life.

Cut it all out. ALL of it. Whether it is a person, bad habit or self-deprecating thought. Your world is already far too challenging for you to be accepting unnecessary problems in it. Get rid of them, you have no space for them – believe me. And, once you do you will feel so much better. Think of a break up as a fresh start, a spring clean of your life. The only people a girl needs are those who are here to stay, the only habits we should form are ones which will help us improve ourselves and make us happy.

Surround Yourself with Friends.

When someone you’re used to leaves suddenly, it’s really difficult to know what to do with yourself and to replace that support system you thought was so permanent.  It may seem impossible but it isn’t; it’s there, right in front of you, in the form of those friends who there WAY before that relationship started, and those you know who are here to stay, those you trust. This includes your friends and if you can, your family too; there will always be people who are there to pick you up, you just need to look in the right places. No matter what time in the year it is, whether it be a busy time at work or even exam season, the friends who are there for you will make time for you and you should make time for them. They are a part of your life you should never neglect.

Put Yourself First.

You are always your number one priority, whether you’re in a relationship or not. Everything you do must be towards making you happy. If doing something means neglecting your happiness, health or well being? Forget it. Concentrate on you, concentrate on improving you. Spend some time focusing on all the other important things in your life; work, exercising and anything else you enjoy doing!

Make a Badass Playlist

Do not underestimate the power of a self-made playlist filled with empowering songs, with nothing to do with relationships, heart break or loneliness, just self-love! Beyoncé is definitely a go-to.

Retail Therapy.

Spoil yourself. Seriously, it helps. Find the money and then spend it! Whether it be a pamper session, a new outfit or a getaway; you deserve it. This isn’t just ‘cause you’ve broken up with someone by the way. You deserve this all year round. I’m definitely going to try spoiling myself more. After all, being such an awesome human being deserves a reward, right?

Remember why you broke up.

Finally, during those moments when, you do feel down and pretty terrible; please remember WHY you broke up. There was a reason and it was a good one. Always remember, you deserve the absolute best and anyone who isn’t that, isn’t worth your time. You are perfect and anyone who doesn’t see that is just stupid. Seriously, they’re stupid. I don’t even know you and I think you’re perfect.
