9 More Reasons We’re Pumped UPenn Is Gone For the Summer

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Drexel chapter.

It’s that time of year again – all your friends are going home for summer vacation while we get to enjoy yet another term here at Drexel. Even though we’ve still got classes and co-ops to tend to while our hometown BFFs are soaking up the sun on the beach, there are some perks to staying on campus over the summer. Many of these are due to the fact that our neighbors at UPenn are vacating the city. We’re looking on the bright side here at HC at Drexel. Here are nine more reasons we’re happy that UPenn has gone home for the summer.

1. More part-time jobs

You’re broke, so any extra cash on the side is a major bonus! Luckily, now that UPenn is gone the competition for local jobs has been reduced significantly. Go apply to those restaurants on Sansom Street, girl!

2. Fewer people trying to get Uber

Friday nights just got a whole lot easier! With two college campuses competing for Ubers to the bar on the weekends, it usually could take north of 30 minutes to get to your destination! Not anymore! Now you can look forward to getting a car in half the time.

3. Also, no more surge rates

As if waiting for the car to arrive wasn’t bad enough, during the rush hours Ubers and Lyfts charge a surge rate that could hike the bill up to $30! Yikes! Say goodbye to that extra charge now that UPenn is gone.

4. More parking

For those lucky souls with cars on campus, you will no longer have to do laps around both campuses to find a parking spot. Now with fewer sports cars dotting the streets, your humble hooptie can be snug as a bug in street spots and parking lots galore!

5. Better turnout at Drexel frat parties

We all know that in comparison to Penn, Drexel parties suck. But in the summer, they get just a little bit better since we don’t have many other alternatives. Yay?

6. You can use their library shamelessly

You’ll no longer feel pressured to purchase a Penn hoodie just to study at their library. Wear your blue and yellow loud and proud while you hit the books!

7. Your drink is less likely to get messed up during rush at Starbs

Since the number of people in the area has decreased, so have the odds that your drink will get screwed up … even if only by a little. We can’t completely guarantee that they won’t write or shout the wrong name or that someone else won’t walk off with your venti mocha, but there’s a better chance!

8. Less shopping cart traffic jams in Fresh Grocer

Peak times at Fresh Grocer are the worst considering there are such narrow isles in the only real supermarket within reasonable walking distance. Now that Penn is gone, you can expect less cart collisions while you’re trying to get your groceries!

9. There are discounts on Penn apparel for your own closet

No Penn students? No problem! You will rock the comfy half-zips and at half price! Since there are no students from Penn to purchase the merchandise, us Drexel kids will gladly do so … so long as it’s discounted!

There you have it, dragons! Nine more reasons we’re ecstatic to see Penn go home for the summer! For even more reasons from previous years, click here and here. Yeah, we get pretty excited about this time of year.
