An Open Letter to SCAD’s Graduating Class of 2016

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SCAD chapter.

As I sit in my cozy one bedroom on Jones St writing this article, it almost feels surreal that the Class of 2016 has officially completed four years of SCAD.

It feels like just yesterday we were all gathered in the Savannah Civic Center, receiving words of advice on college, as well as how we would be “Living the Dream”. When I heard that speech, I’m not going to lie, all I could think about was how my parents would be deserting me in a city twelve hours away from home. Don’t get me wrong, SCAD is/was my dream school, but once I was sitting in that auditorium, I did not think I would last longer than a quarter.

Freshmen year was not the best to say the least. Crappy roommates (literally and figurtively…don’t ask), insane “friends” and really bad food ALMOST scared me away to finish my degree in NY, but I found the perfect apartment off campus, and decided to give SCAD a second chance……and I’m so glad I did.

The amount of talent within the Class of 2016 (and the underclassmen) is almost unreal. I have encountered individuals that can think up the next greatest inventions, create innovative garments, envision beautiful artistic directions, and so much more. And we are lucky enough to have the opportunity to collaborate with students in any major for projects. If it weren’t for such a collective environment, I personally believe we would be “just another art school”.

So how do you sum up four years of SCAD? Would you talk about the numerous times you became sleep-deprived due to perfecting a project? Freaking out about in-class critique? Spending countless dollars to perfect bind a project a creative approach? Having a mental breakdown in creative approach? Or would you focus more on the good memories like late night trips to fancy parkers, taking a break from reality, and heading to Tybee, bar-hopping downtown, gaining amazing friend which WILL last a lifetime, or earning a degree from one of the most sought-after universities in the world?

When we all gather together for the first time since 2012 in the same place we all first met, it’s going to be hard not to reminisce over all of the memories gained in the city of Savannah.

As Elle Woods once said, “WE DID IT”.

Hello! My name is Angela Kastrunes. I am a senior Fashion Marketing and Management student at SCAD. I am the founder/CC for Her Campus-SCAD. Our chapter has grown so much over the past 3 years. I'm excited to say we have expanded to the Atlanta campus, and now have over 20 members combined. It's very bittersweet to realize this is my last year, working as a CC for HC. After graduation I hope to either work in social media management, PR for a fashion brand/music label, or as an editor of a fashion magazine (or Her Campus Nationals).
