Summer is approaching and that’s going to mean something a little different depending on your location. In general, summer means beach trips, hanging out poolside, or being outside more often. But it also means that your makeup and hair habits might have to change. Here are five products and tips to help waterproof, sweatproof, and streamline your summer beauty routine at drugstore prices!

For the face:

While I’m a big fan of BB, CC, and DD creams year-round, summer is the best time to use one. Similar to a tinted moisturizer, these products are a lightweight alternative to your typical foundation, often with SPF between 15-30 to protect your delicate skin from UV rays. Just like foundation, you can find lots of variations to fit your skin needs. When I went to Mexico, I brought this oil-free one with me that contains salicylic acid because I tend to break out in warmer weather. BB creams do tend to lean on the sheerer side, so if you’re looking for more coverage, a loose mineral foundation that will help absorb any sweat or oils might be your best bet.

For the eyes:

For the record, I love a fully done eye look, but there’s nothing worse than the stinging that comes from salt water or chlorine and melting eye makeup. To avoid the pain, the smudges, and the unintended “I’ve-been-crying” look, try paring down to a good waterproof mascara. This mascara from L’Oreal is practically invincible. It. Doesn’t. Budge. Also, if you’re like me and can’t live without liner, Maybelline offers a pretty good waterproof liquid eyeliner – just be careful about touching your face!

For the brows:

If you have good brows, disregard this section. If you’re a little bit brow-challenged, however, this is for you. NYX makes two great products for stay-all-day brows: a primer, and a colored eyebrow gel. I recently wrote a review of their eyebrow primer, and I meant every word. It’s my holy grail product. While a waterproof eyebrow gel will work for the beach and pool, I recommend the primer because it helps combat the sweat during summertime. Even the best, most heavy-duty cosmetics start to bleed and fade from the oils that the skin naturally produces.

For the lips:

Most people don’t think about the skin on their lips when it comes to sun protection. In order to avoid patchy, chapped lips, make sure your lip balm or lip color has SPF. Neutrogena’s MoistureShine Lip Soother with SPF 20 takes this a step further, helping to cool and hydrate dry lips while offering a sheer wash of color and shine. And, with colors ranging from red to peach and even purple, you’re bound to find a fun, summery color that suits you.
