Resolutions for the New Semester

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Utah chapter.

Every new year, most of us come up at least one or two resolutions we are so determined to keep. Those five pounds of holiday weight? They’ll totally be gone by February. Forget about boys and focus on me, myself, and I? Done and done. Yet time and time again, we throw those plans out the window. And usually by day two as well.

However, I think instead of resolutions being something for the new calendar year, it should be for the new school year. Each time fall semester rolls around, it feels like a brand new start. So why not try to make the most of it and commit to being our best selves this fall?

Here are some resolutions we should all try to stick to through the end of this semester.

1. Set some reasonable academic goals. You don’t have to get a 4.0 but aim to push yourself a little further than the year before. It can never hurt to spend a few more hours studying to get that grade boost.

2. Save skip days for good reasons. I get that some days you just aren’t feeling it, and spending a few more hours in bed sounds like heaven. But go to class as often as you can, so that when you’re super hungover and can’t move, you can afford to miss a day or two.

3. Minimize Netflix during study hours. I know firsthand how tempting it can be to zone out in front of Parks & Rec instead of doing homework like you’re supposed to be. But if you want to stay on top of your classes, try to save your shows until after you’ve done your work as a reward for staying focused.

4. Get outside before it’s too cold. Utah has so many amazing places to go hiking, most of them in our backyard. So take a break from school, get outside, and go explore those gorgeous mountains while the weather is still nice and warm.

5. Make time for your friends. Even if it’s a quick run to Ugurt or a movie night in your PJ’s, set aside some time to spend with your homies. Sometimes we all get so wrapped up in life that we forget to appreciate those who are always there for us.

6. Make time for yourself. While you’re busy slaying this semester, don’t forget to treat yourself every once in awhile. Buy yourself that new Kylie Lip Kit, or eat that extra cookie. You deserve it.

7. Have lots of fun! Weekends were made to let loose. Forget about whatever happened in class that week or when your next exam is. Do whatever it is that makes you happy, whether it’s turning up every night until Monday, or chilling at home drinking wine and binge watching Bachelor in Paradise. Let go of the stress and have yourself a grand old time.

Enjoy this semester, collegiettes! Let’s make it our best one yet.
