7 Netflix Comedy Specials to Watch When You’re Stressed

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Notre Dame chapter.

College is a bit stressful (a bit may be an understatement), so a laugh every once in awhile can’t hurt. Enter – Netflix comedy specials.

I like to consider myself a sort of comedy connoisseur, if you will. I also like to think I’m funny, but unfortunately, reality decides to settle in. So, I resort to Netflix comedy specials to make life seem a bit less hectic and crazy, and to make myself feel better about not being the next Amy Schumer.

So, I present to you my top 7 comedy specials to watch to destress from everyday life. All of the following specials are on Netflix – which is incredibly convenient/inhibiting, whichever way you want to look at it.

1. John Mulaney: New in Town

Rating: PG-13

John Mulaney has been an unstoppable force – writing for SNL and multiple award shows – but this special definitely takes the cake in his career. His delivery is perfection, and you will most definitely not regret spending an hour on this special.

I happen know every word to this and I’m not even kidding – it’s pure gold. He also has another special called The Comeback Kid – highly highly recommended.2. Gabriel Iglesias: Hot and Fluffy

Rating: PG

His stories in this special alone are enough reason to watch it – most notably the bit where he gets pulled over by a cop after going to a donut shop. You’ll just have to watch it to see it in its full beauty. I’ve personally seen him live three times now, and countless times watching his specials, and his comedy never. gets. old. His different character impressions are amazing, and his storytelling ability is unbelievably hysterical that I was on the floor laughing. You’re gonna love this show.3. Iliza Schlesinger: Freezing Hot

Rating: Mature

Queen Iliza, oh how I love her. Female comedians always get a bit of flak for not being “funny,” which I’ve never understood to be honest, because she is definitely proving them wrong here. She is unapologetically honest and explores everything from relationships to being basic. 10/10 would recommend.4. Donald Glover: Weirdo

Rating: Mature

If you know Childish Gambino, or Troy on the show Community, this is him. He’s a rapper, an actor, and a comedian – what more do you really need?5. Sebastian Maniscalco: Aren’t You Embarrassed?

Rating: PG

His comedy is beyond genius – he makes comedy out of everyday things we all hate or just glaze over. He does the most flamboyant gestures, and they make his comedy so much better. He goes through topics like his childhood in an Italian family living in Chicago and being an altar boy as a kid… actually, I want to watch it now (do you see what this post is doing to me?!)6. Ali Wong: Baby Cobra

Rating: R

Again with the girl power, this woman does her comedy special while seven months pregnant. She made me feel bad for not wanting to move off the couch, because clearly she is superwoman. Her comedy is even more impressive and she completely slays in this special. A+ Ali, you go.7. Nick Offerman: American Ham

Rating: Mature

Yes, Ron Swanson has a comedy special, and yes, it is as glorious as you probably think it is. Be warned, it lives up to its rating, so exercise caution if you’re more of a clean comedy sort of person. Also, this isn’t a typical comedy special– he instead gives ten tips on how to live a “prosperous life,” in which he continues to be his hilarious self. All in all, it’s a great special – he killed it. So you should watch it, it’s beautiful.
