This is a God dream – You pull up to a church with a towering stained glass window with an image of saints being pulled from the fiery pits of hell by glistening angels in all white. You are greeted by the woman who always sends a card on your birthday, but seems to always forget to wear matching shoes. You sit down at an old wooden pew with the name of your high school crush carved out down the side. Sitting behind you are kids who whine and cry for the entire sermon, but their mother refuses to take them out of the chapel. At the front of the alter, on his keens with his arms spread wide, Chance welcomes you to his faith journey and asks that you take a ride along with him.
Chance brings the familiarity and tradition of going to church and mixes it with the atmosphere of a long drive “down the rabbit hole” on a beautiful summer day with your best friend and a few blunts.
With his third project Chance The Rapper establishes himself as a leader in the hip-hop industry alongside with Kendrick Lamar and Kanye West. Chance hasn’t reached the statistical popularity or success as the two, but Chance combines what Kendrick and Kanye do so well and blends them perfectly. He combines the artistry of songwriting with production of a seamlessly effortless light-hearted style to bring important messages to the forefront.
When it comes to music like this—personable, defying norms while respecting them, and forcing a genre to reflect on it’s past—it forces the drive for great music for the future. This is an ultralight beam; it’s a God dream.
