Going to college and being new to a town that you’ve never lived in before can be scary–what is there to do? How much does it cost? How far away is it? Thankfully, this Charlotte-native has come up with a list of Instagram-worthy things that can be done in a day or less! Get ready to grab some friends, gas up the car and have fun!

1. Lazy 5 Ranch

Lazy 5 Ranch is located in Mooresville, NC, which is approximately 1 hour and 5 minutes from Winthrop’s campus and is a straight shot up I-77. It’s an exotic animal park where you can drive your car through the park and feed the animals out of your window. There are animals such as zebras, emu, giraffes and a variety of others. You can also opt for the wagon ride instead of driving your own car. Whatever you choose to do, keep in mind that they only take cash so be sure to hit the ATM on your drive up!

2. Crowder’s Mountain State Park

Looking for a more outdoorsey adventure? Try a hike up Crowder’s Mountain! It’s less than 45 minutes away from campus, making it a perfect half-day trip. There are multiple trails you can choose from, but if you want to get the best view then you have to go to the pinnacle at the very top. Not only do you get a great picture and a great workout, but you also get a day free of homework! Who doesn’t want that?

3. Windy Hill Orchard & Cider Mill

If you’re looking for a place that has everything that feels like autumn, this is it. You can enjoy apple picking, locally made cider for those 21 and over and the most amazing homemade apple cider doughnuts. If you’re lucky, you might even get to see a pig roaming the apple orchard! Since it’s located in York, it’s an easy drive and sure to be a fun time!

4. The Carolina Panthers

Charlotte, which is only 20-30 minutes north of campus, is home to multiple sports teams. The Carolina Panthers are based out of Charlotte and play at the Bank of America Stadium. Panther’s fans are always down to cheer on their team and have a good time and the atmosphere at the games reflects that! Not only can you go and see a game, but the Bank of America Stadium offers public and group tours throughout the year.

5. Downtown Rock Hill

If you don’t have a car, downtown Rock Hill is the perfect way to kill some time–and it’s only a 15-20 minute walk down Oakland Avenue. Downtown Rock Hill has so much to offer. In addition to the things that are there everyday such as Amelies, Gettys and Fountain Park, there are also a variety of events hosted downtown. Throughout the year, there will be “Food Truck Fridays” which occur the third Friday of every month until Sept. 16th, Oktoberfest, Yoga in the ParkChristmasville, Come See Me and The Old Town Farmers Market! There is truly something different going on almost every weekend! How great is it to have so many things happen so close to campus?
