As my junior year of high school chemistry teacher, Mrs. Golcher put it…“organization is the key to life.” Her sweet, British accented voice popped into my head as summer came to sudden stop. I realized I really needed to get my ish together if I was going to have a fun and successful senior year.

College is an amazing time in a young person’s life. There are so many fun opportunities to get involved in and social events to attend to. In order to stay on top of things and be proactive, highly consider buying a planner/agenda/organizer or whatever you like to call it. Trust me, it will become your life like Katherine Heigl’s in 27 Dresses.

I have had a lot of experience…I mean A LOT… in trying out different tricks of the trade when it comes to planning out the week ahead, the month to come or the end of the year. Don’t get me wrong, I have come up with these so-called tricks on my own, thus they may not have any credence. However, trying something is the first step, right?

I might have finally gotten it right. Here are 4 tips that will boost your productivity and help keep you organized for one heck of a year!

1) Buy an assortment of colored fine point pens. Feel free to use ballpoint pens instead. No matter what you choose, I would highly recommend spending a little bit more money on the writing utensils to ensure they last for a good while.

2) Purchase a planner that fits you the best. I like simple, plain and chic. Some like their names engraved in them with flowers galore and “Girl’s Night Out” stickers. Totally acceptable. Whatever you choose, make sure you’ll be excited to take out your planner rather than dread the To Do List.

If you are absolutely dying to have the latest edition, $35, Lily Pulitzer planner from Paper Source, please…be my guest. They are incredibly cute and super trendy. Otherwise, have no fear! Target, Marshall’s, TJ Maxx and Home Goods is here! You don’t have to spend two Sunday brunches worth for one piece of school aka life supplies.

3) Time. I know, we #GIRLBOSSES don’t ever have enough hours in the day. Carving out 30 minutes per week to write out what the week will bring will only put your mind at ease.

4) Once you finish something or accomplish a task, check that darn thing off your list! You did it! Now, you can easily move on to the next homework assignment, networking meeting or lunch date.

Cheers to managing your time wisely and being the best person you can be with the help of the one and only planner!

Just doing me the best way I know how through the art of journalism
