Let’s be honest here. Packing can be a difficult task to most people. It is definitely not my strong suit and I quickly realized that any guidance would have made this process just so much easier. After my experience, I’ve come up with a few answers to your potential packing questions that will make this part of your journey much more smooth and less time consuming.

1. What should I do with my toiletries?

These can take up a good chunk of space in your luggage. I’d pack these first just because sometimes toiletries can be costly in foreign countries and they might not have the brands/items you need! Travel sizes of your toiletries are also a good investment, in case you decide to be abroad in more remote areas. You might also want to pack some over-the-counter medicine, just in case.

2. What shoes do I bring?

ALWAYS bring a pair of comfortable and versatile walking shoes. Ā This pair can be a pair that matches with most of your outfits and doubles as a pair of daily wears. Depending on the weather, you can invest in a pair of rain boots and/or even sandals. Sneakers are a great pack for any outdoors-y or fitness activities. Don’t forget to pack at least one pair of fancy footwear (ie. Flats, heels) for potential social events!

3. How do I know what clothes I should bring?

Clothes can be tricky. You want to be as prepared for any event that might be thrown at you. But first, remember to check the weather of your destinations. With the help of laundry, I’d say you would only need at most 8 pairs of pants, whether they are a combination of jeans, shorts, sweatpants or trousers. Ā In terms of shirts, pack a few tees, a few tanks, a few sweaters, some fitness clothes, and you’re good! If you’re going somewhere chillier, don’t forget a jacket! Packing at least one nice outfit for formal or social occasions will be sure to have you ready for any event!

Packing tip: roll your clothes so they don’t take up that much room!

4. How many pairs of socks/underwear do I really need?

In my opinion, I would say nothing short of week’s supply. These items are small so see how much more you can fit into the random spaces in your suitcase after you’re done packing.

5. What do I need to bring in terms of anything tech-related?

It’s always useful to have a portable luggage scale with you just for caution. International adapters and portable phone chargers are a must. These will be your lifesavers while you’re travelling the world. (And of course, a camera and a phone!)

6. What kind of bags should I bring?

I always recommend a backpack. It’s great for every day use at school or even more travelling. A small cross body bag/purse that’s big enough to carry your phone and wallet are also useful when your backpack becomes too much of a nuisance.

7. Towels? Sheets? Linens?

You should check with your host institution to see if they provide these for you. If not, I’d suggest buying them when you arrive. They can take up a bit of room, but if you have space, feel free to throw ā€˜em in your suitcase!

And, these are the answers to your packing worries for studying abroad! Good luck and have fun, my fellow travellers!

See you on the flip side!
