Seven Big Facts About The Big Event

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Wyoming chapter.

Throughout the years, Laramie, and it’s residents, have welcomed more and more generations of students into their town. The Big Event is a way for us to say thank you to the community,we do that by going out and giving back through service. The University of Wyoming has been hosting the Big Event for a few years now, and every year we receive positive feedback from community members as well as students. If you are interested in participating and learning more, here are 7 facts about the Big Event:

1. It began in 1982 at Texas A&M.

Since then I has become the largest student-led day of service in the country.

2. It has even expanded to some schools around the world.

Like Australia, Spain and Germany.

3. The Big Event was brought to the University of Wyoming in the fall of 2013

Over 700 volunteers were sent out to 90 location throughout Laramie.

4. The University of Wyoming gets upward of 600 students to volunteer every year.

All willing to spend their morning painting, doing yard work and other activities across town. But it’s not just the students who are excited about it, community member absolutely love getting to know the volunteers.

5. This event is not based on socio-economic need.

Student volunteers are sent out to help all those who have submitted a job request and have had them approved by trained site leaders.

6. Big Event Site Leaders are trained students.

They take on the task to help make the event run as smoothly as possible. Going from one jobsite to the next, making sure everyone involved is having a good time!

7. The Big Event will be on October 1st, 2016!

Volunteer registration ends on Tuesday, September 27. You can choose to sign up individually or as a group! I encourage you all to participate and help unite our community. Go to uwyo.edu/big event to register!

After the Big Event, The UW Sustainability Club will be hosting the Solar Fest, there will be food, music and fun, all powered by solar energy! Here’s a video to hype you up for this year!
