Year/Major: Class of 2018; English and Religion

What is your favorite class you’ve taken so far at St. Olaf?

Religion 121

Favorite professor:

I’ve absolutely loved every religion and English professor that I’ve had so far at St. Olaf — Professor Jothen, Professor Hanson, Professor Ripley, Professor Walter, Professor Booth, Professor Wells, Professor Titus, Professor Cherewatuk, Professor Kwon Dobbs, Professor Mbele. All of them! Peder Jothen is my advisor, though, so he definitely has a special place in my heart.

Favorite study spot:

The Undercroft!

Favorite caf creation:

Oatmeal with brown sugar, peanut butter, applesauce, and granola.

Favorite pictures taken on campus:

Favorite thing to wear in the winter:

My favorite mittens!

Favorite sound:

I have synesthesia, so I see most sounds in color. However, in choral situations, when people sing, certains chords and unisons look clear. These are my favorite sounds, because they are always very pure and very beautiful!

Favorite type of dog:

All dogs are my favorite. I have been adamant about this since I could say the word “dog”. (A picture of Maren’s dog, Cheyenne).

Favorite book:

I love Christian Wiman’s My Bright Abyss, a lovely, complex little book of poems, prose, and reflections.

Is there anything you still want to try while on the hill?

I’ve still never been rock climbing at St. Olaf. But I work at Skoglund, and every time I am there I tell myself that I need to do it!

How have your future plans changed during your time on the hill?

I arrived at St. Olaf as a freshman unsure of what I wanted to do. I tried out biology, but when I didn’t like that I took an English class and absolutely fell in love. Then, during my second semester of Freshman year, I took Religion 121, a required religion course for first years, and discovered the religion major. Religion 121 changed my life. I am hoping to get my MSW after I graduate or edit for a publishing firm (or both!). As a freshman, I never ever thought that this is where I’d end up.
