Home Away From Home: Dorm Room Tips

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at South Carolina chapter.

College is supposed to be fresh and exciting and while most of it is, dorm life sure as heck isn’t. We may not be HGTV pros, but we do have some tips to make your dorm room feel less dungeon-ish.

1. Lighting

The awful fluorescent lighting that comes with your dorm is nothing but uncomfortable and cold. Adding lamps, string lights or lighted decorations gives your space a calming vibe.

2. DIY Headboard

A DIY headboard gives you the chance to customize your space in the way you see home. They’re super easy to make and it will give the illusion of a bigger room!

3. Pillows, Rugs, & Blankets

Fluffed pillows on your bed, a shag rug on the cold floor, and cuddle-y blankets are some of the most comfortable items of the world. Fuzzy pillows are always fun… never hold back with the pillows!

4. Wall Decor

Adding pictures is the perfect way to get that little piece of home in your dorm because you will miss your home eventually. Hanging pictures of your family and friends or putting them in cute picture frames will give your dorm a happy feeling! Add other various wall decorations, such as paintings, to brighten up the place.

5. Organization

Whenever all of your things are organized, your room will feel less cluttered which leads to less stress which leads to a relaxing room. Organizing everything from your closet to your vanity or desk to under the bed will ensure your sanity after a long day.

These tips will help you transition into dorm life and ease the distance of your move, whether you’re 10 minutes away from home or 10 hours.
