At the beginning of the election, I realized one thing – if I was to learn a single thing from Republican nominee Donald Trump was a living example of what rape culture looks like in America today.
From June of 2015, I have listened to and seen countless videos, photos, memes, and Tweets about Trump. I can’t escape him or his racist derogatory remarks. Whether it was him calling a former Miss Universe winner “Miss Piggy” or accusing women of their appearance, one thing is clear – Donald Trump is a primary example of what rape culture looks like in America.
Last week, a tape from Access Hollywood was released to the public, containing audio from Trump and Billy Bush. Within the audio, lewd remarks were made about women.
“When you’re a star they let you do it,” said Trump. “Grab them by the p—y. You can do anything.”
This statement is one of the many examples of rape culture, which normalizes sexual violence and blames victims who have been affected by rape or sexual assault. When we have public figures that make remarks similar to Trump’s, not only does this normalize sexual violence, but it makes it acceptable for those who do choose to perpetuate rape culture.
Regardless if you’re a star, sexual assault is not and will never be okay.
If anything, Donald Trump is living proof that rape culture is alive and real in America today.
When we hear comments like the ones Bush and Trump made in this video, it is your responsibility to stand up for those who have been affected by sexual violence and assault. It is your responsibility to make sure that we teach people to use consent and that we do not condone remarks about sexual assault and harassment anywhere.
Although you may not agree with all of the policies Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton has outlined in her speeches and debates, recognize that what Trump is saying is not acceptable for any politician – or anyone – to promote rape culture.
Despite your political views, do not vote for Trump. When you vote for Trump, you support all of the lewd comments he has made about women, both in the past, present, and the future derogatory comments he will make about women. Don’t vote for him. Do it for the women who are in your life and the people who have been affected by sexual harassment and assault.
With about 20 days left in the election, it is vital that you vote for a candidate that celebrates the women of America, instead of invalidating them.
