13 Must See Halloween Movies

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Mville chapter.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year again… Halloween! And with Halloween comes candy corn, costumes, and movies! Here are 13 movies you have to watch before you go trick-or-treating on October 31st!

  1. The Nightmare Before Christmas

Nightmare is a fan favorite, a fan girl favorite, and my best friends favorite. I, personally, would recommend waiting and watching this at the end of the Halloween season as leeway into Christmas, but this is a movie that is good all year round, and just better around Halloween. And Zero is just too cute!

  2. Halloween Town  And while you’re at it watch II and III! Even though they switch actresses on us, this movie is a Disney movie classic. As a kid I always wished to visit Halloween Town, and I recently found out you can! Apparently the real life Halloween Town is located in Oregon! Follow Marney as she discovers her Grandma and herself are witches, and that they must defeat an evil warlock looking to harm the mortal world.

  3. Twitches  Twitches was a Halloween movie that surprised me, I originally wanted nothing to do with the movie, but once I watched it I fell in love! It has a great message about family bonds, and about how you have to face the darkness with the ones you love in order to overcome it.

  4. Hocus Pocus  As a child Hocus Pocus made me cry at the loss of our beloved Thackery the cat, but the movie is amazing, and apparently can be purchased at Target for $4! A steal if you ask Me!

  5. Scary Godmother Scary Godmother is an animated halloween movie I never thought I would actually like. It used to play all the time, and I refused to watch it, but now it’s one of my favorites! Watching a teenager get punked by his little cousin and her scary godmother and friends is a great way to pass the time.

  6. Tower of Terror

I’m currently mourning the loss of the Tower of Terror in Disney, but it has always beenone of my favorite movies to watch around Halloween.  I can remember exiting the ride and begging my dad to buy me the DVD in the store, because I was 9 and didn’t know about Amazon.

  7. Phantom of the Megaplex

A disney classic, it a spin off of the Phantom of the Opera, and takes place in a movie theatre! It was the first movie I watched to ever really scare me!

  8. The Houses October Built

I dub this movie one of the scariest movies I have ever seen, personally. It follows a group of friends trying to find the scariest, and most elusive, haunted house of the season, but what happens when the haunted house starts to follow you?

  9. Pet Sematary A Stephen King classic! What happens when your daughters car passes away unexpectedly, and you bury it on ancient and magic filled land.  And what about burying a human on these sacred grounds? While an older film, filmed in 1989, it’s sure to have you on the edge of your seat!

  10. The Messengers

The first scary movie I ever watched, hiding in my friend’s bedroom, hoping her parents didn’t find out we were watching a scary movie and not the Disney channel. Starring Dylan McDermott (pre-American Horror Story) and Kristen Stewart (pre-Twilight Saga) the movie follows Jess and her family, as they try to become closer after Jess has a drunk driving incident that nearly kills her younger brother, Ben. When scary and creepy things start to happen, Jess is determined to prove to her family that it’s real, and discover the secrets behind their new home and new friends.

  11. The Addams Family

While not nearly as scary, the Addams Family is a classic family and a classic film to watch for  Halloween.  While Wednesday Addams is busy being all of our spirit animals, her parents are being relationship goals.  When a long lost “family member” is found, the family rejoices, but soon rethinks the validity of the family member, threatening their families fortune!

  12. Jeepers Creepers  Another one of my first scary movies, Jeepers Creepers is sure to make your skin crawl. Starring one of my favorite actors, Justin Long, when his character and his sister are driving home, they come across the “creeper.” The “creeper” happens to be a creature who eats human flesh, and is looking for a new meal!

  13. Dead Silence Dead Silence is a film about creep, possessed, and killer ventriloquist dolls. If you talk, they kill you, if you stay quiet you may survive. I think that’s enough said.
