If you’ve never heard of The Rocky Horror Picture Show – or even if you’ve watched the movie at home but have never been to a live showing – you are a virgin. (Don’t worry, I’ll explain later!) Regardless of how familiar you are with the plotline of TRHPS, there are some things you should know before heading off to your first live showing. So sit back, hold on tight, and let me show you a little about “my favorite obsession.”
Are you a virgin or a slut?
In the real world, a virgin is someone who has never experienced sexual relations, but in the world of Rocky Horror, a virgin is someone who has never experienced TRHPS either performed live or with a live audience. So don’t be alarmed if you are asked at the door whether you’re a slut or a virgin – they really have no interest in your personal life – it’s just a way of people getting to know you and your experience level with Rocky Horror. (But don’t lie! Just like in the real world, it’s always better if you’re honest!)
Do I dress up?
The most important thing to remember is that you should be comfortable. You will probably see some people, men and women, in heels and fishnet tights but it is absolutely not a uniform. Some people get a kick out of dressing up while others prefer jeans and sneakers. Whatever makes you happy and comfortable, just wear that! In essence, TRHPS is about having fun no matter who you are and what you like, so keep that in mind while preparing for the show.
What are these props for?
You may be handed a small bag of props upon entering the theater. Sometimes, they will have instructions to go along with them, but most of the time you’ll be staring at a plastic baggie with a playing card and piece of newspaper wondering if you’ll ever make it out of here alive. It’s normal! Over the years, live audiences have brought a variety of props to live showings to play along with the characters during iconic scenes. While you are not required to use the props, it’s a fun way to get involved and immerse yourself in the culture. The best way to go about this is simply to follow what everyone else is doing and be prepared for things flying around in the air.
WHY IS EVERYONE SHOUTING!?
Many people will yell back at the screen during extended pauses or breaks in dialogue, and it’s perfectly acceptable. If there is any place that you are allowed to scream at the characters… it’s TRHPS. There really is no set guide as to what people will say and when they say it, so the best way to deal with this aspect is to have a sense of humor and follow along when you can. After your first time, you’ll know what to say and can teach all the other virgins too.
What happens if I look clueless?
Honestly, no one expects newcomers to know everything, so don’t worry about standing out from the crowd. In most cases, you’ll find that the audience at Rocky Horror is too excited about being there to worry about if you put your hat on at the right time. Just go with the flow and take it all in, and you are bound to have the time of your life. Oh and don’t be embarrassed about anything. The zany and sometimes raunchy aspects of Rocky Horror make it even more fun, and it’s important to remember that no one is trying to embarrass you or make you feel uncomfortable. Try to be open to new experiences and remember that “it’s no crime giving yourself over to pleasure.”
But most of all…
Remember to have fun! TRHPS is a community of people who come together to let themselves go wild for a night and keep the tradition alive. Just like in real life, your first experience will be the only one like it, so keep it loose and don’t stress too much – you’ll enjoy it much more in the end.
