Dennis Matsuev, one of Russia’s most celebrated living artists, will be performing at the Chan Centre on Thursday, October 20th at 8pm. This will be Matsuev’s second performance in Vancouver.
Matsuev was the winner of the Tchaikovsky piano competition in 1998. Show One founder and executive producer, Svetlana Dvoretsk, compared this accomplishment to the Olympic games, in that if you win, you have “all the opportunities in the world.” Matsuev is consistently in demand, and being only a bit over 40, he has a huge impact on youth across the world. Matsuev is not only a professional pianist, but he also aides the artistic direction for many music festivals and is president of the Russian charity, The New Names, which assists young musical talents.
The upcoming concert on October 20th showcases many different classical pieces. These pieces come form all across the world, and from many different time periods. Dvoretsk says that the concert has “all the colours” you could possibly want. Matsuev’s artistry evokes different emotions for each individual, which is what makes his talent unique and is why he is so in demand.
Matsuev is know for playing many encores and some jazz pieces at the end of his concerts, so prepare to be thrilled by Matsuev and his talents. Dvoretsk also urges those who lack experience in attending classical concerts to attend Matsuev’s show because “this is the concert to go to if you have never been to a classical concert.”
