Make Time for Me! – A PSA from your Body to You.
How often have you found yourself thinking the following? “There aren’t enough hours in the day.” “I don’t have the time to take a nap right now.” “I can’t even comprehend what this person is even trying to tell me right now.”
Today, it seems like we are always on the move. Specifically, in college its either going to your next class, going to office hours, working, eating, trying to see friends and family, or attempting to get a decent 6 hours of sleep. Some days it seems humanly impossible to accomplish it all and we never think about one of the most important questions we need ask ourselves.
“Have I taken care of myself today?”
We live crazy, busy lives and in them we fail to make time for ourselves. However, if we don’t give our bodies a rest we won’t be able to put our best foot forward. For example, skipping out on sleep is a very common thing to do in college and is easily accomplished, but doing so could cause sleep deprivation and the lack of being able to comprehend lectures. In the long run, ignoring signals your body sends you telling you to slow down could end up hindering you from performing as well as you could. Unless we give our bodies the necessary time to replenish itself, we won’t be able to function at full capacity.
A common misleading stereotype is that making “me time” can be selfish and the more caring of a person you are the more you give into this feeling. IT IS OK TO SAY NO SOMETIMES!! Remember that there are only 24 hours in a day and you can’t create more time. So, make a list of priorities and start practicing better time management to create time for you to be able to stop for a few minutes and take care of yourself. Whether it be a 30-minute nap or starting to binge watch that show your friend suggested to you on Netflix, find what relaxes you and go for it. When you’re done, you’ll find yourself re-energized, refocused, and renewed.
It’s so easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of life that we lose sight on the fact that unless we take care of ourselves we won’t be able to do all that we intend to accomplish.
So, next time you’re feeling restless or that there’s way too much on your plate, stop and give your body a minute to recharge so that you’ll come back rejuvenated and better than ever.
