“Once a Gilmore, Always a Gilmore”

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bryant chapter.

The iconic duo, Rory and Lorelai Gilmore, are back in action November 25th, 2016. The last time we saw Lorelai and Rory was eight years ago, when episode 22 of season seven signified the ending of an era. Now it is time for us to see where they have ended up. The revival is called Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life and through four 90 minute episodes, each highlighting one season out of the year, we will see how Rory and Lorelai have grown and developed. The two most well-known and loved girls in the town of Stars Hollow, Connecticut are back and better than ever.

The revival is ready to bring up all of the emotions that we have tucked away since that last scene with the girls sipping coffee at Luke’s. This emotional episode ended with Rory single and ready to start a new chapter in her life. However, these four episodes will bring back all three of her ex-boyfriends. So, whether you are Team Dean, Team Jess, or Team Logan, get ready to hold on to your seats and follow Rory on her roller coaster into the past.

Many of our favorite characters will be back for the show too. Rumor has it that the beloved couple, Lorelai and Luke, will still be together throughout the revival. Amongst the characters that played in the show eight years ago, almost all will make an appearance. There has been a lot of controversy regarding whether or not Melissa McCarthy, the actress who plays Sookie St. James, will be appearing in the revival. Back in February it was stated that she did not have enough time in her schedule to appear. Recently, this has changed and she will appear briefly in the show. Have no fear, Sookie is here!

Unfortunately it has also been noted that Richard Gilmore will not appear in the revival. Actor Edward Hermann, who played father and grandfather of the Gilmore Girls, passed away in 2014. This death will appear within the beginning of the revival, and the show will pay a special tribute to Edward Hermann.

Many fans may not have known that Amy Sherman-Palladino, creator of Gilmore Girls, left the show before the seventh season due to contract disputes. The season still went on without her, however it did not include as many cultured or witty comments that we are used to. You may have felt that season seven didn’t connect as well with the previous seasons, and you are right. Palladino is back and ready to create a perfect revival for the fans. She still has not watched season seven, but she did make it clear that during the revival season, seven’s storyline will continue on. However, she will be incorporating a new storyline that was not present before.

The girls have of course grown, and their wittiness has grown with them. They are wittier than EVER. Although this is true, they are also at very different stages in their lives since we last saw them. Lorelai, mainly focused on running the Dragon Fly, is now at her own Inn. We watched Rory grow up with a major focus on school, now she has graduated college and entered the real world. Things are changing and we are lucky enough to get another wind at the Gilmore girl lifestyle.

The scariest part of this revival is that Rory is in her thirties. RORY IS IN HER THIRITIES. How is this possible? We watched her graduate high school, then college, and now she is so grown up. This will be a hard adjustment for all fans, including Rory’s character. During the revival it is said that Rory is going to be having a life crisis of her own, and we are all ready to watch it unfold.

Now that it has been established exactly what the revival has in store for us, we must re-watch the important episodes to have our favorite people fresh in our minds. Of course, we must start with Season 1, Episode 1, titled “Pilot.” Watching this episode is for us to refresh our minds before we dive back in. It is important to reestablish our love for the citizens of Stars Hallow before we dig in further. The second episode that should be watched is Season 1, Episode 10. This episode, called “Forgiveness and Stuff”, highlights the first Gilmore Christmas dinner, and Emily decides that only Rory should come due to disagreements with Lorelai. Lorelai spends Christmas with Luke and this is where we start to see a relationship unfold.

The important episodes of Season 2 are Episodes 4 and 22. Episode 4, titled “The Road Trip to Harvard”, highlights Rory’s first time visiting her dream school Harvard. Lorelai and Rory take this trip due to Lorelai breaking of her engagement with Max. Episode 22, “I Can’t Get Started” highlights Sookie’s wedding. Jess is also back in town, and Rory must make her decision between him and Dean.

Season 3 is eventful for Lorelai and Rory. In Episode 13, titled “Dear Emily and Richard”, Lorelai gets the pleasure of helping Sherry (Christopher’s fiancé) through labor because Christopher is out of town. Rory has an eventful time in episode 22, titled “Those are Strings Pinocchio”. Rory graduates Chilton as the valedictorian headed to Yale. The dirty deed is done here too because Rory must ask Emily and Richard to pay for Yale.

Although Season 4 is in the height of the Gilmore Girls series, the only episode that MUST be re-watched is the finale. “Raincoats and Recipes” truly sums up the entire season into one emotional episode. Lorelai and Sookie are preparing for the Dragonfly Inn’s opening day, Rory and Dean relight their spark although he is married to Lindsay, and Luke tries to take a step in his relationship with Lorelai.

Season 5 is definitely a crowd favorite. Logan is now in the picture and Rory’s life takes many twists and turns. Episode 7, titled “You Jump, I Jump, Jack”, introduces the “Life and Death Brigade”.  Rory goes on one of their adventures and finds herself very out of her comfort zone. In the season’s finale, “A House Is Not a Home”, Rory is arrested after stealing a boat with Logan. To top it all off, Rory announces that she will not be returning to Yale in the fall.

Episodes 13 and 22 of Season 6 are the most important by far. In episode 13, “Friday Night’s Alright for Fighting”, Luke finds out that he has a daughter and he keeps this information from Lorelai. This shoves a wedge into their relationship. Episode 22, “Partings”, is extremely difficult for Rory. Logan graduates from Yale and is summoned to London to work for his father’s company.

Season 7 is still pretty fresh in our minds, so it is only extremely important to watch the finale of this season too. Season 7 Episode 22, “Bon Voyage”, encompasses Rory leaving and finally being on her own. Although this season is not as charming as the rest of the seasons, it still has its moments.

Now you have found out all you need to know about the revival and watched all of the episodes that should be fresh in your memory. Always remember to keep the town of Stars Hollow in your heart and start counting down the days until the revival is aired. Remember, “In Omnia Paratus”, you are ready for anything.
