You went apple picking over the weekend with all your friends and were thoroughly enthralled by all of the fall scenery. However, you didn’t think of the fact that you have to go back to your small 8 x 8 dorm room at the end of the day. Trudging through your hall with twenty pounds of apples, you think to yourself “Why did I just drop $30 on apples?” Then you text your mom saying that you’re broke, and she asks why. You can’t seem to find the courage to say ”apples” so you just say “because I am a college student” and leave it at that. But now, sitting alone in your room, you think “what could I possibly do with all these apples?” and then you start brainstorming.
1. Baking
You can pretty much make anything you want with apples, but the dorm kitchen can be limiting. In that case, the apple crisp mix from the dollar store can be your best friend. Although it seems a little sketchy, all you need are your apples, the box, and a stick of butter and you are good to go. Also, warming them up just in a microwave can be a simple but amazing way to get your surplus way down.
2. Toppings
Apples can top the oatmeal that you have every morning, the ice cream that you have every night, or really anything that you want to top with apples.
3. Drinks
You could really impress people and make some apple cider for the season. With the amount of apples you have collected you could make enough cider for the entire dorm, many times over.
4. Gifts
Everyone loves a good apple during the fall season. Just stand outside of your dorm and hand out apples to everyone that walks by. I’m sure you will get a few looks, and some might think you are trying to poison them, but honestly you gotta do what you gotta do.
5. Late night snack
We all have those nights. You’ve been at the “library” until very late and you are in desperate need of food. Instead of ordering Dominos or Chinese food, think about your apples! This way, you are avoiding the freshman 15 (#healthy) in seasonal way!
6. Decoration
Whoever said an apple was just a miniature pumpkin was so right. Take those extra pumpkins that haven’t be consumed yet and get yourself a mini jack-o-lantern. This is your chance to show your creativity, so make it good.
Moral of the story: if you lack the same self-control as yours truly, you have many options to get rid of those apples, preferably before winter break rolls around.
