Cheering on the Bonnies with Chelsea Didas

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SBU chapter.

Year: Junior

Major: Psychology

Hometown: Brockport, NY

Her Campus: “What are you involved in on campus?”

Chelsea Didas: “Public Relations co-chair for Campus Activities Board, Peer Coach Leader, and cheerleading”

HC: “When does the cheerleading season start?”

CD: “Cheerleading tryouts are usually the second week of classes. We start practicing right away for our Fan Jam performance and game day routines.”

HC: “How’s the team looking this year?”

CD: “We have a lot of new talent this year as we have eight freshmen on the team. We have all worked really hard to have strong stunts and have used all of our past cheerleading experiences to come up with new stunting ideas. Our team is really dedicated this year to wow the crowd. Our coach and captains are extremely helpful and dedicated to making sure we look our best.”

HC: “Which games do you prefer to cheer for, the men’s or women’s games?”

CD: “I enjoy cheering at both games. The men’s team does get more school support so it is always fun to be cheering in front of a huge crowd. However, our women’s team killed it last year making the games so exciting to watch. With less people at women’s games we tend to get more support from the crowd when we do stunts as they are less people and we are more noticeable.”

HC: “What are you most excited for this season?”

CD: “I am honestly just excited for the games to start. We have been practicing for games since the second week of September and I am really excited to finally show the crowd what we can do. My favorite times at Bonaventure are when I’m cheering at games, they’re just so exciting and you really bond with the other girls on the team.”

HC: “When does your season end?”

CD: “Our season ends whenever the men’s and women’s team end. If they make it to the A-10, twelve cheerleaders get to go to cheer on the team. Last year we ended in Oregon when the women’s team lost in the NCAA tournament.”

HC: “What’s the most nerve-wrecking experience you have had as a cheerleader at Bona’s?”

CD: “I get nervous before every game at Bonaventure. I would have to say my most nerve-wrecking experience was freshmen year cheering at the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn for the men’s A-10 tournament. I was so nervous as our school had so many students make the trip to Brooklyn to support the team and it is also the biggest arena I have ever cheered in.”
