HC Reviews: 5 Great Breakfast Spots

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SMCVT chapter.

Of all of the meals to go out for, breakfast is hands down my favorite. One, your first meal is supposed to be your biggest, so I feel better about ordering that side of bacon to go with my already giant meal. Two, breakfast is actually my least favorite meal of the day (I prefer lunch over anything) so going out makes it more enjoyable for me. Three, two words: refillable coffee. And as a huge benefit, it’s typically the least expensive. There are endless amount of incredible breakfast places, but I have narrowed down five of my favorites. Check them out this weekend with your SO or your best friends!

Handy’s Lunch

74 Maple St. Burlington

I recently found this gem tucked away in a residential neighborhood. It opened in 1945 and has been family run ever since. All available seating consists of a large horseshoe shaped counter surrounded by assorted sports memorabilia and traditional decorations. Everything here is great, from the classic two eggs and home fries to the chocolate chip pancakes. If you’re really hungry (and feeling ambitious) try out the Big Daddy Breakfast or the Chuck Norris.

Monarch and the Milkweed

111 St. Paul St. Burlington

This cute little spot is situated right next to Flatbread in downtown Burly by the park. They have their own coffee blend (which is delicious) and for those who are legal, a damn good bloody mary. The inside is bright with relaxed counter seating, cute tables for two, and modern wooden decorations. What to order: Biscuits and Gravy. My sister swears it’s the best she’s ever had.

Athen’s Diner

46 Highpoint Center, Colchester

Find me someone who doesn’t love Athens Diner. When I first got to Saint Mike’s I couldn’t go anywhere else for breakfast, I loved it that much. The old-school classic diner vibe is perfect, accompanied by comfy booths or counter seating, and a big cup of coffee. What to order: any one of their skillets. My personal favorite is The Athens.

Penny Cluse Cafe

169 Cherry St. Burlington

Easily a favorite of many people in this area, Penny Cluse Cafe is a cozy breakfast place featuring lovely window seating ideal for people watching. And if it’s good for Joe Biden, it’s good for anyone, right? What to order: my roommate swears by the pancakes and homefries.

Sneakers

28 Main St. Winooski

Sneakers is a local classic and, as a result, is almost always packed. Try to go during the off hours, it’s definitely worth it. It’s an all around great choice with an upbeat, relaxed atmosphere and friendly staff. What to order: eggs benedict or waffles, both are great choices. And definitely order one of their milkshakes, they have specials everyday!
