Campus Celebrity: Melate Berhanu

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Towson chapter.

What do you do?

I’m the Director of Special Projects for University Residence Government! In my position, I coordinate all of the campus-wide programming for students living on campus.

When did you start doing it?

This is my first year in URG. I applied because I had always been interested in programming and planning events. It’s really neat being able to connect with students living on campus through my programs.

What sparked your interest in this activity?

Programming has always been a passion of mine. I was involved with an organization prior to URG where I was able to plan events for the campus. It is an exciting process seeing your simple ideas translate into real life events.

How can someone else get involved with this? What tips do you have for people who want to do what you do?

If you are a student living on campus, join your residence hall’s Building Council! It is a fun way to meet new people and plan events for your building. If you are not a student living on campus, go to involvement fairs and find organizations that you’re interested in. Chances are they host events and could use your creative mind.

How has this created connections for you personally and academically?

Planning events has allowed me to get out of my comfort zone and put myself out there. I’ve been able to meet people that I normally would never have come across. It’s allowed me to form connections with all the people that work behind the scenes during event staffing all the way to students who attend my programs. In terms of academics, my position has sparked a new passion in me that I want to continue having after college. I hope to pursue a career that allows me to connect to individuals through programming.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Oh gosh. I don’t even know where I see myself tomorrow! As long as I am happy, healthy, and doing something that I love, I am living a good life.

What do you want people to take away from this interview?

I want people to take away that anything is possible! As cliché as it sounds, I need everyone to understand that no idea is too small or dumb. If you are passionate about something, go out and do it! Regardless of whether it is programming related or not, nothing is impossible.
