Concert Review: Chance the Rapper in Seattle

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Oregon chapter.

I’ve consumed enough food for three to sustainably defeat what was heavy hangover only thirty minutes before. The only reason my dinner is even relevant at this point is because by 9:40pm on Monday, October, 24th I was about to literally be standing only feet away from Chance the Rapper, and a decent meal was exactly what I needed to fuel me up for a night of dancing, singing, and enjoying my ultimate fantasy. Now that I’ve mentally and physically prepared myself for probably the best night of my entire life, I can officially endure the mosh of people shoving and pushing their way to the front before the opening act even steps foot on stage. Oakland, California native, Francis and the Lights opened for Chance and let me tell you one thing; Francis is a rad human being. Before he even begun, he made sure audience members were safe and taken care of (the pushing and shoving was seriously unbelievable). It makes sense, though, Francis and his wacky dance moves influenced the crowd to move with him.  Francis showcased songs from his album “Farewell, Starlite!” He performed ‘I Want You to Shake’ and ‘May I have this Dance,’ among others you should definitely be adding to your Spotify playlist; like yesterday. By the end of Francis’s set; if you weren’t a fan already, then you definitely were by the time he was done.

The only thing I will say was I waited in a sweaty mess of individuals waiting an additional 35 minutes for Chance once Francis had left the stage. At first, I was salty (and very sweaty) but the second I saw a hat with the number three on it, I was officially in heaven. Chance was accompanied by Carlos, who reminded Chance of his path. Chance did just that and perfectly combined his new tracks from “Coloring Book” and he also took it way back, reminding devoted fans why they fell in love with him in the first place. He performed songs he’s been featured in like “Ultralight Beam,” “The Way” and “Baby Blue.” He gave us live tastes of his new songs like; “Same Drugs,” “Juke Jam” and “No Problem.”

Chance put on the most incredible experience, forget about the word ‘show or concert.’ He finished with “Blessings” and came back for an encore of “Summer Friends.” Chance is more than a rapper, he made sure his fans were okay too; when a fan got too hot and couldn’t stand throughout the show, he stopped, got security, and waited until she was okay to keep going. Chance is an artist who feels deeply for the songs he sings. At the end of the show, Chance got emotional while singing “Blessings.” He explained how our blessings in life won’t come at his shows or at physical things in life. Chance said that our blessings will come when He does, because when our “praises go up, the blessings come down.” Chance made the best effort to make sure people had an unbelievably rad time. Well Chance, mission accomplished. As for me, I’ll be scrolling through photos and videos until the next time I get to see my future husband live again. So for those of you going the show in Portland this Friday; soak it in and live it up, cause music is all you got.

Yes, Chance the Rapper and I are going to get married; he just doesn’t know it yet. Seattle proved to be the best weekend I’ve had in a long time. Thanks, Seattle and Chance. Monday was one for the books.
