The Best Things About Hopkins

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at JHU chapter.

Everyone needs a pick-me-up during the school year, especially at Hopkins where we’re too busy stabbing each other in the back to get the best GPA. All kidding aside, here are some of the best events that Hopkins offers and things to look forward to in order to make those rough spots a little more bearable.

  • Hoptoberfest: every October, the committee hosts a number of events. There are free shirts, food, stress puppies, and a performance at the end of it. Previous performers include We The Kings and Parachute. And for those who are of age, there is alcohol (it IS a play on Oktoberfest after all).

  • Sterling Brunch: once a month or every other month, the FFC goes above and beyond and serves spectacular food. There’s live music, an entire table dedicated to dessert, seafood, and other delicious offerings. It all tastes incredible and really is consistently good each time.
  • Spring Fair: for one weekend, everyone lets loose. Food trucks populate the Freshman Quad offering foods from funnel cakes to Greek to Asian. On Keyser Quad, local businesses set up shop and sell wares. At Wyman Quad, a petting zoo is set up and there are inflatable bouncy houses/slides for the families that come to campus for the event.

  • MSE Symposium: Hopkins gets these famous people to come speak over in Shriver. One such speaker coming up is Bernie Sanders himself and previous guests include Edward Snowden, Bill Nye, and Aziz Ansari. It’s really quite cool to attend these speeches and it makes for some great icebreaker fun facts.
  • Lighting of the Quads: before we all head home for the holiday season, everyone gathers on Keyser Quad to watch all the Christmas lights turn on. There are fireworks, free food/hot drinks, speeches by Ronny D. himself. It’s a festive time and you really feel the Hopkins community then.
