Here at HCX we know that Bonfire Night away from home can be a daunting experience. Do you brave it at Westpoint and spend an insane amount of money for a professional firework display, do you make the trek to Ottery St Mary to see those legendary tar barrels, or do you maybe brave your own fireworks? If you think you can host your own Bonfire Night (and please only do this if you’re going to be sensible!) we’ve got a receipe for a classic Guy Fawkes treat that will tickle your tastebuds…. toffee apples!

This receipe makes 7 delicious toffee apples…

You will need:

  • 7 apples
  • 200g caster sugar
  • 175g golden syrup
  • 175ml water
  • a couple of drops of red food colouring (optional)
  • lollipop or bamboo skewers

Method:

  1.  Lightly grease a few baking trays as prep.  Insert your sticks into the apples.
  2. In a medium saucepan over high heat, mix up your sugar, golden syrup and water. Heat until you can drop a small amount of your mixture into cold water and it hardens. Remove the mixture from the heat and if you’ve got food colouring to add, do that now!
  3. Holdi the apple by its stick and carefully dip in your syrup. Turn the apple in the gloop to coat it evenly.
  4. Place your toffee apple on your baking tray and wait for it to harden. (Hint: if you’re short on time- your apples will harden faster in the fridge)

Enjoy your delicious treats, and make sure to be safe this Bonfire Night!
