An Open Letter to my Landlord

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Winona chapter.

After the first year or two of living on-campus, many students move off-campus into houses or apartments. With living off-campus comes responsibility and having to deal with the monthly rent, annoying neighbors, and of course, landlords. Some landlords can be very strict and uptight about everything, and some are more lenient and relaxed about having college kids rent their houses. Our landlord at 379 (my current house) happens to be the lenient and relaxed type, so here’s a letter to him.

Dear landlord,

How’s it going? Let me first start off by saying that the house my roommates and I are currently renting from you is awesome. It’s spacious and actually very nice for a college house. We love the new kitchen too; the fact that the refrigerator is actually in the kitchen now is quite nice! We magically ended up across the street from some friends of ours so of course that’s a bonus as well! According to our friends, we’ve been deemed “THE house” for this year . . . you know, the house that hosts everything from birthdays to movie nights.

But now I want to say we’re sorry. We’re sorry for complaining about our duplex neighbors who are constantly being loud, rude, obnoxious and are frankly a-holes (we’re really not that sorry). But thank goodness you (and the police) have given them many warnings. Also, sorry for temporarily breaking our garbage disposal. I swear we had no idea that there were birthday cake toppers jammed in the thing.

We also want to thank you. Thank you for being the type of landlord that gives us 24 hours-notice before stopping by or before there’s a tour, otherwise you would probably be walking in on a mess from the weekend before. Also, thank you for not mentioning the abundance of dishes that continue to build up on the drying rack . . . we’re working on getting better about putting them away.

Also, thank you for literally always being there when we have a mouse situation. Hopefully now that our kitchen and basement are littered with traps we won’t need your assistance on rodent issues anymore, but if we do we’ll hit you up.

Lastly, thank you for letting us live in your house. We really do love living here and we hope that you like us enough to let us rent again for next year! You’ve put up with us living here for one semester, so hopefully you can put up with us again next semester.

Thank you for everything!

Sincerely,

The girls from 379
