A Letter to My Long-Distance Best Friend

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Iowa chapter.

To my long-distance best friend,

I hate that I even have to start off this letter with “to my long-distance best friend” because the fact that we aren’t in the same town anymore is something that I cannot stand thinking about. I try not to think about it, but it’s always in the back of my mind that we’re apart and that I won’t be spending time with you today, or this week, or next week.

I love you. I am so grateful that I met you, and not being able to see you every day is a struggle. I’m thankful for our long phone calls and FaceTimes. I’m thankful that no matter how many days we go without seeing each other in person, we still fill each other in on everything that’s happening in our lives and that we’re still just as close as we always have been.

I really think that this distance between us has made us closer. We tell each other everything and talk every day over texts and phone calls, but when we’re finally together again after so many weeks nothing has changed. We still laugh like we used to, and we still nap together and have those comfortable silences that only two best friends can have.

Unfortunately, when I do get to see you, it gets harder to leave you every time. Even though I know its not goodbye forever and that we’ll see each other again in a few weeks or a month or so, it’s hard. It’s hard to live in city without you, and I hate not being able to explore with you, take pictures with you, drink coffee with you and go out with you.

Through all of the hardships of being away from you, I am so happy for you. I’m happy that you are living in a city that you love, making memories and new friends and exploring without me. I love seeing your posts about what you’re doing, who you’re hanging out with, and watching you become the person that you are, even without me. I wish you all the best because you are my best friend, and there’s nothing more that I want than for you to be happy, no matter how far away we are from each other. I’m always a phone call, text or a FaceTime away. I’m confident that no matter what happens, that we will always be close and that things will never change. That’s what best friends are for.

Love,

Your long-distance best friend
