5 Things to Do in Blacksburg Over Thanksgiving Break

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Virginia Tech chapter.

Not going home for Thanksgiving break? No worries. You can still manage to have fun while most students are away. Here are five things you can do to make sure your Thanksgiving break here is a great one!

1.       Ask everyone you know if they are staying in Blacksburg over Thanksgiving break. If you do know people staying, hang out with them to keep social! And if you don’t know anyone, go meet some new people! It can also be a great opportunity to get to know some of the RAs in your building as they will most definitely be here. Just make sure that you leave your room and talk to someone because the last thing you want to do is stay in your room alone for the whole break.

2.       Try to organize your own Thanksgiving feast if you know some people that are staying for break too. You don’t need to get fancy with the food as we all know how hard it can be to cook in a college dorm or apartment. The easiest, and still delicious, thing to do is to stop by your local grocery store and get a nice rotisserie chicken with boxed mashed potatoes and an array of canned or fresh vegetables. We all know that Thanksgiving is mostly about the loved ones you share it with and not just the food anyway!

3.       Decorate your room and/or apartment to get into the Thanksgiving spirit so you enjoy the time you spend time there. It seems like a simple thing to do, but it makes a huge difference. How you decorate your room changes your entire mood about the space. I suggest getting some great smelling candles and cute wall decor. You could even browse Pinterest for some decorating inspiration and do some crafts to pass the time!

4.       Get tickets and go to the VT vs. UVA game! Who doesn’t love a good football rivalry game? This year this must see game happens to be at Virginia Tech, so you will be right where the action will be. Tickets are still being sold by students on basically all Virginia Tech facebook pages and for reasonable prices. It is definitely worthwhile to go!

5.       Get some fresh air and exercise and go hiking! This one isn’t in Blacksburg, but it is as close and as far as you make it, depending on the place you decide to hike. It is the perfect time for a hike as the landscape will be colorful with the changing leaves, the weather will be just cold enough for light layers and the trails won’t be busy as many people will be away.
